I know that a lot of locals get caught up in some kind of moronic inter-state rivalry, but I'm no local, thankfully.

OP, make a few visits to Tallhassee, then form your own opinion. If you don't like Gainesville for the reasons you listed, you'll hate Tallahassee. There are always homers like this who will always be trying to polish their turds.
Butthurt?

I don't like people posting false and inaccurate information. They may be your opinions, but your opinions are baseless, except possibly based in some kind of prejudice.

The tone of your post speaks for itself.

Tallahassee has FAMU and FSU, which combined have like 50,000+ students, which is a sizeable part of the population of 168,000 according to City-Data. Some posters say its like Gainesville but worse, others seem like diehard Tally fans. I don't know who to believe, ha ha.

Guess I gotta make a few rides out myself to check.

On that basis you would probably like Tallahassee better. I rarely have anything to do with campus or its surrounding areas, or need to.

Believe the people that moved here for college and ended up staying for 20 years.

As one poster said, if you don't like Gainesville for the reasons YOU listed... you want to get out of there. You are going to hate Tallahassee even worse because at least Gainesville you can quickly be out of it, Tallahassee.. not the case. Tallahassee is exactly like Gainesville in that sense of a college town, just more of it. But it is college life centered, and married with family centered. Not a place for young single professionals. There isn't much in between.

That being said, it is usually better to do your masters elsewhere from your undergrad. But between FSU and UF, go look at the rankings for what you are doing, and pick the best one.

Tallahassee is also more redneck outside the city than Gainesville.

The food and shopping here Gainesville wins, sorry but one mediocre mall and another that is going out of business does not cut it, the outdoors is better. The best shopping in the panhandle is in Destin.

Sources: Lived in Tallahassee for 20 years, went to FSU as well... went to Gainesville on weekends considerably (50+ times) because many of my friends were there too.

I actually just moved back to Tallahassee taking a few pre reqs for the Grad Program I wanted to do and was going to do it here... I am leaving for the exact reasons you mention, I am too old (28) for the stuff going on here, going somewhere else and taking the program online
Depending what you are doing, look at some online masters programs offered by UF and FSU. They both have plenty now.

My family lived in the NW part of town and it was far from Ghetto. Like anywhere you have Universities, they are always in the Ghettos. If you are looking for an apartment I recommend The Pines, www.thepinestallahassee.com. Far from students, the ghetto, and near everything.

I agree with this, the greater northwest side of town is safe, not college to sporadic college (referring to only students), not ghetto to sporadic lower income (not ghetto), and cheaper.

Sounds like Gainesville hasn't changed all that much since I lived there in the early 70s; college crowd, and young families.

Default Done both

I attended UF and later FSU for graduate school and I far prefer Gainesville. The reply about Gainesville being a nicer city really refers to the feel of the city like you are talking about. Tallahassee always felt smaller and dirtier to me. Neither are really cosmopolitan.

Another one that never got 1 mile from campus?

Tallahassee is MANY TIMES the size of Gainesville and the nicer areas of Tallahassee dwarf those of Gainesville.

Default TLH vs Gainesville

Tallahassee is a much better town overall than Gainesville. TLH has a very underrated and walkable downtown (with a lot of history), the capitol complex, nice neighborhoods away from the university/southside area, beautiful canopy roads near the outskirts of town.

Gainesville has Cafe Risque and jorts.

Cafe Risque is actually well south of Gainesville on another I-75 exit. The only "strip" joint in Gainesville cannot actually show skin and gets fined on a regular basis because their girls' G-strings are too skimpy. Which begs the question who gets to decide how small is too small.
