Personally, I prefer Gainesville because I can get to Orlando and Jax in 1 1/2 hours or less.
Gainesville is great for students, young families, and is starting to become very popular with retirees because of the Shands health system. If you are single and done with college than you may not like Gainesville. If you work in education, biotech, medicine then finding a job may not be as difficult. Both cities are islands of blue in a sea of red but the " rednecky" areas outside of Tally are straight out of Deliverance.

So what? It's still not a 30 minute hop. It still doesn't make Gainesville bigger or the surrounding area less redneck. Ever been to Starke? Baker County? Hello?

In my opinion, if the city is good, there isn't a need to travel to another city on a regular basis. So for all those in favor of Gainesville, is it really a benefit that you live close to 3 major cities? That is saying Gainesville doesn't have enough to fulfill needs, and you need to go to another city to get them.
Many forget that Tallahassee has a population of close to 200,000, not including the residents of Leon County, which use Tallahassee as their address. Also, 75,000 colllege students aren't accounted for either.

Neither city provide bigger city needs though if somebody wants that... Gainesville is just closer drive wise to that...They provide about on par as you would expect with the population of other cities that size. So just b/c Tallahassee has a higher population, doesn't mean it is going to provide a different level of amenities. It just provides MORE college stuff to do and MORE family stuff to do...
Tallahassee has nothing in quick driving distance, Gainesville has Tampa and Orlando ...and if you want to include Jacksonville in there...much closer to that also.
Tallahassee is over a 4 hour drive to Atlanta or Orlando or Tampa
They are both college towns and both cater to college students and families. Not much in between.
The original poster said he wanted big city cosmopolitan life, and with either, I would wager he would be highly disappointed.

Yes, in fact, it is nice for me to live close to 3 major metros. If I want to attend an NFL,MLB,NBA, or NHL game then this proximity comes in handy. I don't like not having a major airport in Gainesville but at least I can chose from 3 major airports. It is also nice to able to go to concerts every now and then. Not to mention that my little girl will attend the FLAGSHIP university for the state which is right in our backyard. Tally is a nice town but it is silly when these Tallyfans don't concede certain obvious advantages of living in other towns. Like I said, Tally is closer to nicer beaches..happy?

I'm about to graduate with my BA and am also considering graduate school at FSU or UF. I haven't been able to make up my mind which.
As a comitted Christian raised in rural Kentucky, I'd love nothing more than to live in a "redneck" area (presumably with cheap rents) and to commute to class. That's what I have done as an undergrad. Does this mean that I'd fine Gainesville more enjoyable?

Gainesville is very liberal. If you want to drive 30/40 minutes from campus you can find that.

Well, you can't take more than three steps in Gainesville without walking into a church of some denomination, and more are springing up outside of town. That should make you happy, but beware, Gainesville has (gasp) gay and secular people.

Every college town has a ton of churches. That doesn't make the area conservative in any way.
