The way things are going, even up here in NYC, everybody and their brother might soon be selling hot dogs! Only problem is another one of our miliions of groups with a cause is telling people that franks are no good for your health. So even the hot dog stand is in jeopardy!
Dunno, I might just have to move down there and be a beach bum.... some sunscreen, a beach towel, some ladies in need of a massage/cream on their backs...that's the life! Who needs a regular job? lol. In these tough times, I'll take whatever pay they wanna give me!

Good luck if Florida doesn't have the right job opportunity.

You guys are making me nervous!...Hubby has a good salary and (telecommutes) for work from home 95% of the time for International company with offices all over states. He just needs to occasionally travel and have access to a decent airport. We live in Boston and are getting killed here money wise to try and raise a family. If my husband were to ever lose his job we would be locked into this metro area and and at risk for him making less money in this tight job market-which could do us in. We bought our house at a good time and have equity in it regardless of the current market conditions. If we could sell and move to Saint Johns County where schools are excellent, better taxes and pretty much buy our house outright and put a little money in the bank-doesn't that make sense? I mean if he ever lost his job while we were in FLA at least our expenses would be less to cover and less at risk to lose what we would of here...

My husband and I moved to Florida from MA in 2004. We both had good jobs at the time. We were sick of the weather and high home prices. We had no debt, 20k in the bank (plus investments), several degrees between us, great work history and 3 PT businesses we could do on the side (programming/web design, pet sitting and travel agency.) We have been here 4 and 1/2 years and are still looking for good, full time work (not contract with benefits.) Now we have no savings and debt. No benefits. We like Florida and would like to stay but it set us way back moving here! We may have to move. We had our pet sitting business for 5 years up north with zero issues. Moved here and met shady people left and right. Refuse to do it now-don't trust people here! sad really.

Another thing to think about......
Just because you have a job "lined up" in FL and decide to take it, don't you realize YOU'LL BE THE FIRST LET GO if they need to downsize? Many companies who "appear" to be at their pinnacle of success have folded or had to downsize. A brand new employee has *no way* of knowing the true financial status of a potential employer. Sure, you can read financial reports of how it has performed in the very recent past. So??? Things are changing too swiftly to stay abreast of a potential employers financial status or even be aware of changing policies within the company.
At the current time, one of Florida's largest private companies (130,000+ employees) is scaling back due to financial losses. Behavior on the job that was once overlooked is now cause for employee termination. Also, hourly workers are having hours cut in order to not lower their wages and salaried employees are having to work longer hours with no pay increases. People are growing a bit concerned over these changes.

Florida is also a right to work state. And the salaries are much lower here.
Yes it is somewhat cheaper to live here then other states, but if you cut your salary in half , you could end up further behind then if you stayed put.
We retired early and our children are grown so it doesn't effect us directly, but it boggles my mind how many people I run across who just move here and have no back up plan.
Luvthatmouse is typical of the people you run across. I mentioned the couple from PA, moved here to open their own business and it never happened.
Now a 50 something year old man with bad knees is crawling around crawlspaces laying cable for Brighthouse as a contract worker. Low pay and no benefits.
Imagine doing that in the heat of the summer here? No thanks.
They ended up losing their home and now rent and can't wait to get out of here.
I do know realtors post on here and lie through their teeth.
I don't care how bad things are in the rest of the country FL is losing more jobs then anywhere else, and many aren't that good in the first place.
And I also agree about "shady people" here, you have to really careful about who you deal with, especially when it comes to home repairs.

lol, ( not laughing for real ) but that sounds exactly like me and my gf... only we are gonna be outta here before we make it 6 months... I just got here before Christmas and my gf got her Jan 1st. We aren't sticking around to see it bleed more. We are in no savings, no debt and no benefits or health care either. We are saving up a bit of money for a move out. I haven't touched my non bank savings though, and won't, but bank account is sure dried up. Yeah I came here to help my parents transition into retirement and be a little closer for a bit... not gonna work out. They can stay in Florida, I have more to worry about than them!
FL shed the same amount of jobs as CA and has less than twice their economy in December...FL economy is much less diversified and caters to minimum wage work, or illegal work. 5 months already on the job search and neither of us found nada, not even part time.
