Second, you blame the northerners for Floridas ill, I am sorry to burst your little bubble but if you take those "northerners" money out of Florida and the entire state will collapse in no time flat.
We "northerners" and "vacationers" pay all your taxes, you do not even pay a state tax. We build your roads, your schools, get your water etc.
Our money is what makes Florida tick. Take us northerners out and the tourist out and you will be living in a swamp or a total dump.
It was us northerners who build the darn state to being what it is. You probably would not even have a job if it was not for us 'northerners" spending trillions of dollars a year.
If you happen to look around the state, the biggest issue I have is those people who do not do anything to help pay their fair share. Its not us northerners or midwesterners, or northeasterners who are the problem.
California has its own problems, goofy cities with freaks in them, over spending in crappy towns and no spending in the better towns, blood sucking businessmen who take the governments money and ran.
California has more problems then Florida will ever have. PERIOD.
So what is high tax to you? You are not paying taxes now, what do you want a free ride your entire life?
Everyone needs to pay their fair share and if taxing those who are NOT taxed and sucking off the rest of us is what is keeping the state going then its time to TAX those who are NOT paying taxes.
This is a national problem, to many people sucking money out of the government ( and those of us who DO PAY into the tax base ).
Time to stop that and force people to pay into the system to use our roads, schools, bridges etc or make them work to repair those roads, bridges etc for FREE.
Do not compare Florida and California, not even close. California is full of freaks and weirdos who screwed it up themselves. Look around people are running out of the state for some reason! ( NOT ALL CALIFORNIANS are freaks and weirdos to make it clear so someone does not get all in a mood)
HIGH TAX NANNY STATE
Give me a break!
Time to force EVERYONE to pay into the tax system, not just us select few who actually work for a living and pay taxes. That is the problem, those who are NOT paying are destroying our roads, schools, water etc and getting it for FREE.
Go after every single person in Florida who has not paid any tax last year and make them contribute in some way, pay taxes to use my roads or schools or work it out building and repairing roads, bridges, schools etc.
NO MORE FREEBIES!!
Its called get a DAMN JOB even if it pays 5.00 bucks an hour so you can pay to use those roads us "northerners" paid to build.
Or work on the chain gang, repairing roads, building new ones etc.
Obama wants to rebuild America, he needs to start with the bums who wont work, make them work for FREE, feed them 2 meals and put their lazy butts to work on our roads, bridges, buildings etc. Make them work for us for free for a change.

We have a sales tax and our roads are paid by taxes on our gas.
Income tax is unconstitutional.

Although Florida has no state income tax, property tax is through the roof and sales tax is as high as 7% in Miami-Dade County (the sales tax increase was supposed to go towards mass transit). Add to that, the tolls on our highways that many of us pay....this isn't such a cheap place to live.

I'll vouch for that, property tax is rediculous, although the property is pretty cheap compared to most other places.
I can't imagine even living in the Miami-Dade area, I had to go through Miami in the early 90's for a Cruise at port, that city was a dump. It looked like a 3rd world country.
I recently went to Tampa recently and I've really only been in the northern region of the state (where I live in Fort Walton Beach) and Tampa was just way too diverse for me, the beaches weren't as nice (though they weren't horrid by any means) and it was crowded. The accents were different down there compared to the northern part of the state, I seriously thought I was back north or something.

I definitely wouldn't want to live in Miami, plus didn't their mayor announce some sort of assault weapon ban? I like living in the gunshine state but unfortunately it seems like theres plenty of crooked politicians down that way as well
I'm not willing to lose my right to own guns and it appears the Mayor discriminates against my "choice" of weapons specifically.

You should try spelling it like it is.
SunnyDays is right about Florida... if not for the north, Florida would be Mississippi.
My family moved here in the 60s and opened several businesses.

Florida's legal CUBAN immigrants vote republican. Legal Mexicans in Texas vote republican. African-Americans ( for the most part ) vote democrat reguardless of living in Florida, North Carolina, California, or Utah. The same can be said for most ( not all ) minority voters.
Will Florida ever become a " high tax, nanny state " Yes and no. I believe it's in Florida's state constitution that there will never be a state income tax and I also believe there is a cap on how high the states sales tax can go.
Florida has some of the lowest taxes in the country when it comes to sales tax and the state income tax. Florida nails you with Property taxes though.
As for being a nanny state, Florida is already a nanny state. I still find it funny that they will suspend your drivers license if your car insurance lapses. 10 years ago in Tennessee you didn't even HAVE to have car insurance.
California has too many policies and laws in place and the thing that kills them the most financially is that they are lax in execution of inmates and that their 3 strike laws have put too many prisoners in their state prisons.

Interesting post. Just as our legislature is talking about adding a penny sales tax to cover our education costs. That's what they say today. IF it passes, God only knows where that money will be spent. I wouldn't trust the current legislators with a dollar of my money because they obviously do not know how to manage it. Of course they're getting the chance right now, but I hope to goodness the voters get this worthless bunch out in the next cycle.
Speaking of Cali prisoners, Florida just broke 100,000 inmates. That's one of the biggest industries in the state and more and more prisons are being built. DOC is also historically one of the most corrupt.
Another thing that's hurt Florida for several years are the numbers of illegal immigrants. They took jobs that Floridians could and WERE doing until they came along and would do it for a less than livable wage. They've eaten up our medical and educational budgets and now complain because all the jobs are gone.
Imagine that.

And it doesn't even take the beaches. Last year we went to the Oregon coast and saw lots of nice country, but when we came back across that Florida line and I-75, it was green, clean and beautiful! If anyone ever wants to compare Florida with some other states, just drive I-10. Or I-80 across Nebraska, southern Wyoming and Nevada...
