Northerners have overpopulated Florida's tranquil swamps and beautiful coastlines, giving rise to controversial and activist politics previously unknown to Southern Belle state... What was once a business friendly state run by the seasonal tourist influx and a "laissez-faire" business model is turning into an overpopulated jungle of regulation and bitterness. There are so many laws (business and environmental) in Florida that did not exist 10 years ago.

Third world refugees are also floating across the ocean in droves to reap the benefits of America. All over Florida, Central American and Caribbean immigrants subsidized the state's decade-long house building party. Now that the building frenzy is over, will these newly arrived immigrants begin to demand social services like their bretheren "reconquistadores" in California?

Will Florida's weak industry/commercial base tolerate the raising of taxes in order to become a "nanny state" like California? Or how about its rows of foreclosed homes? You can't raise taxes on foreclosed homes!

Then I will have a good reason to move to Texas.

I have a lot to say about this but will bite my tonque.

First, Florida is no California. California is a weird state with weird people and things going on.

Second, you blame the northerners for Floridas ill, I am sorry to burst your little bubble but if you take those "northerners" money out of Florida and the entire state will collapse in no time flat.

We "northerners" and "vacationers" pay all your taxes, you do not even pay a state tax. We build your roads, your schools, get your water etc.

Our money is what makes Florida tick. Take us northerners out and the tourist out and you will be living in a swamp or a total dump.

It was us northerners who build the darn state to being what it is. You probably would not even have a job if it was not for us 'northerners" spending trillions of dollars a year.

If you happen to look around the state, the biggest issue I have is those people who do not do anything to help pay their fair share. Its not us northerners or midwesterners, or northeasterners who are the problem.

California has its own problems, goofy cities with freaks in them, over spending in crappy towns and no spending in the better towns, blood sucking businessmen who take the governments money and ran.
California has more problems then Florida will ever have. PERIOD.

So what is high tax to you? You are not paying taxes now, what do you want a free ride your entire life?

Everyone needs to pay their fair share and if taxing those who are NOT taxed and sucking off the rest of us is what is keeping the state going then its time to TAX those who are NOT paying taxes.

This is a national problem, to many people sucking money out of the government ( and those of us who DO PAY into the tax base ).
Time to stop that and force people to pay into the system to use our roads, schools, bridges etc or make them work to repair those roads, bridges etc for FREE.

Do not compare Florida and California, not even close. California is full of freaks and weirdos who screwed it up themselves. Look around people are running out of the state for some reason! ( NOT ALL CALIFORNIANS are freaks and weirdos to make it clear so someone does not get all in a mood)

HIGH TAX NANNY STATE

Give me a break!

Time to force EVERYONE to pay into the tax system, not just us select few who actually work for a living and pay taxes. That is the problem, those who are NOT paying are destroying our roads, schools, water etc and getting it for FREE.

Go after every single person in Florida who has not paid any tax last year and make them contribute in some way, pay taxes to use my roads or schools or work it out building and repairing roads, bridges, schools etc.

NO MORE FREEBIES!!

Its called get a DAMN JOB even if it pays 5.00 bucks an hour so you can pay to use those roads us "northerners" paid to build.

Or work on the chain gang, repairing roads, building new ones etc.

Obama wants to rebuild America, he needs to start with the bums who wont work, make them work for FREE, feed them 2 meals and put their lazy butts to work on our roads, bridges, buildings etc. Make them work for us for free for a change.

That's biting your tongue?!?!?.....

Sure, it isn't correct to blame northerners for all of Florida's ills...... but they are responsible for a good deal of them...

Y'all have an attitude that FL is essentially a northern state, and northerners are the only people who ever do anything for Fl...... attitudes like that are the reason us Southerners lash out at northerners....

Uhhh making people work "for free" is slavery..... banned by constitutional amendment......

As for taxes......I certainly don't want them going up. FL has pitiful wages, so high taxes are a lot more of a burden here than they are where wages are better.... the economic advantage to FL is low taxes, not a high salary

I don't think FL will turn into CA, but parts of FL are getting alarmingly like NY and the northeastern "nanny state".....

Sunny Day, Tell us what you really think...........Awww, on second thought.

I dont even know where to begin with all that, but as a former "northerner" who started a business, paid more than my fair share of taxes, I'd have to say you may be just a bit over the top here.

That being said, I'd agree that we are a ways off from equalling the blatant stupidity seen in California. However in the just under twenty years I've been here, I see it slipping ever so slightly in that direction. The process will speed up as the conservative "northerners" die off leaving the younger generation, brainwashed into the socialist regime by the public school system grow to take their inherent place in society. About another twenty years Florida should be about where California is today, I would think....

LOL, work on the chain gang for free....if the economy doesnt get a bit better here before long, people ARE gonna be "volunteering" for the chain gang by kicking a cop in the shin. At least it will be free housing and three squares a day. Even those $5.00 per hour jobs you say we all should go get are pretty hard to come by around these parts today.......

If most "techie", Generation X Northern transplants moved out of Florida, chances are the state would become a happy, comfortable backwater like it always was. You're right, many things would be missing in Florida. Like the horrendous traffic, rampant overdevelopment, and the expensive, taxpayer funded "bike trails" that white Subaru and Prius crowds love to use.

IN terms of Florida's climate, demographics, economy, and overall direction, Florida bears a stunning similarity to California 30 years ago. Liberal policy is never reversed; once "nanny state" legislation is imposed, it can never be taken off the books. If Florida's burgoening immigrant class starts demanding the same services as they do in California, we will be on a dangerous path to becoming a true economic and social disaster like California.

We can't let Liberal, Santa Clause politicians take over Florida's legislature; they will quickly woo Florida's newly arrived immigrants with expensive services in return for generations of political support, just like Hispanics in California and blacks in Northern "Rust Belt" cities...

I don't see that happening because compared to California, Florida's immigrant class is a bit more conservative. There is also a much larger segment of middle class immigrants that don't need handouts or free healthcare to survive. That's not to say that a large segment of that population won't request services "for nothing" however.

Yea, maybe in 1970. Florida's immigrants are a lot more diverse now than the old, business owning Cubans who came over in the 1960's. Ever been to a Wal-Mart in South Florida? It is like going to a street market in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, or Managua, Nicaragua. These people would jump at the opportunity to reap social benefits if a political party ever became organized enough to sign them up.
