Isn't Publix employee owned? Hence, the name Publix? I heard that is was. When my daughter first moved here, she tried to get a job in Loss Prevention at Publix. She discovered that they have a coporate LP department, from Directors to Managers, etc. A friend of hers is an Asst. Manager at a Stop N Shop supermarket in NY. The salaries they pay for these Asst. and Manager positions was amazing ($60,000 to $110,000 to start). Maybe they don't pay the clerks much, but management, and LP is considered management, does.
Here in Naples I have found that they cater to snowbirds and Hispanics. There are a lot of products from around the country (mostly MidWest brands), besides a very big section of "very strange" looking Mexican food.
We also have a HUGE Walmart Supermarket --- just food. Unbelieveable how cheap they are. It's very clean and they also have a huge selection. Milk is under $3/gallon and I just bought a family size box of Post Raisin Bran for $2.94.
We also have Sweetbay, Whole Foods Fresh Market, and a couple of others I cannot think of right now.

I miss Publix! We don't have them in NC and I am so looking forward to going back down south and get a nice big publix sub or something from the bakery. Their prices are comparable to other grocery stores (I am a Walmart shopper for price only). I love their italian bread too. Yum!

The one thing that I don't like about Publix's in SE Florida is that their delis are like mini ethnic food marts. They are usually either Hispanic or they are overwhelmed with soul food. Green beans, broccoli, mashed potatoes, and other American classics are hard to find at any of Publix's Delis, especially in Miami. Instead, they have collard greens, fried chicken, beans and rice, "Pico de Gallo", "Croquettes", and other exotic foods which taste good but are often spicy (Hispanic) or gluttonous (soul food) and therefore bad for your health.

I agree with this, their subs are great! So are their baked goods, which is unusual for Florida, with its hard water.

It would be nice if Wegman's came here. I also liked Genardi's.

Publix is more expensive for many items. They seem to sell shelf space rather than promote variety. There are many ingredients that I find hard to find in Florida supermarkets. I came from a small upstate NY county that had more variety of ingredients in that one area than I find anywhere in Florida. I would like to see the Price Chopper chain come to Florida, they would wake-up or obliterate the competition.

The original post is a marketing researchr. You shopped originally in England where you had a choice of how many markets. Including the open air market of course. What counts out Wal-Mart (all over the world groceries) and Winn Dixie (a southern gem of a store)? What counts out Winn Dixie? Unless you are doing some strange marketing. What made you leave England to come to Florida to shop in a grocery store? Wasn't the fresh baked goods enough for you there? Night if that is what turn you on baby. Whole Foods will suck every dollar bill out of your pocket they have every conceivable temptation you can imagine. Including fresh baked goods and homemade cheese and olives. and Fresh Market is a joy just watch the prices. You really are the only one in Florida who has misgivings on Publix except for the employees who call it PUBIX despite it's private ownership. And you can negotiate prices in Publix since they are so desperate to make sales since the average shopper can go one mile to the next store Publix store to get a better price. Who needs grocery stores open 24 hours a day. They only do that in boom times when the economy is good. There were tons of store open 24 hours a day in Florida 6 years ago. Now even Winn Dixie closes at 10 pm. Thank god someone gets to go home and get some rest. Most south Florida shoppers are very enthusiastic about their Publix stores it's pretty funny.

Whoaaaa.....
Firstly, I don't hate Publix, FFS! I don't have some sort of vendetta against them, nor do I think they are particularly horrible. Secondly, I do know what a monopoly is...geez.
Can't someone express their opinions on here without people getting all defensive, as if I insulted their mothers or something?
Heck, I just said that I wish there was more choice down here. I've never been to any Publix north of Fort Lauderdale, so if the Publix supermarkets in the rest of Florida are amazing, I accept that and subsequently bow down to your retail expertise! I can only comment on the Publix supermarkets I've been to down here, particularly in South Miami.
...and for those who say there is variety, there's no Target here that sells food. The nearest Wal-Mart that sells food is 12 exits up the Palmetto Expressway and Winn-Dixie here does absolutely suck and isn't even in Publix's league as a major supermarket chain.
Florida really needs: Online Grocery Shopping & Delivery Service - Tesco.com
'nuff said.

There have been attempts at online grocery sales in this country (including one by Publix, IIRC) but none of the companies that tried has been able to make it work beyond a bigger city regional level when you started to talk about perishable items.
