I do not believe that employers should be forced to take on disabled people when the person needs more accomodation than is reasonable, and that the State (taxpayers as a society) should be willing to reimburse an employer who spends money to create accomodation for a disabled worker.
That's an odd argument...I mean, if a disabled person is willing to work and able to do certain types of work, then as far as I'm concerned, they should be given the help they need, or they'll just be on welfare. Why shouldn't the taxpayers foot the bill for that? Don't you think we all share a collective responsibility to help people out who are less fortunate than ourselves?

It's no different than being in school. You get grades for your achievements. If you don't achieve wnough, you can't play on sports teams. If you aren't the best, you won't make valedictorian. You can be top of the class, but if another student transfers in and is smarter or a better learner, you could get bumped. It's called life.
No, what you just wrote is called a "cop out".

Not everyone will go out and set the world on fire. Not everyone is even capable of getting a college degree (if they were, college degrees would be worthless anyway). Unfortunately, it seems that the American way is to judge people like this and condemn them if they don't measure up to certain standards of achievement. Living in this country for a few years has made me realize why there's so much crime here....because there's a flip side to this "high achiever" & "me, me, me" society.

I think you need to reread what I said.

Sounds like a shady franchise owner expecting that the high school kids are too dumb to know their rights. Every place I've ever worked in Michigan, Tennessee, and Florida has followed the federal law by both paying federal minimum wage and by posting the required federal minimum wage posters in employee common areas.

Going back to the original topic, from Publix's web site:

Why Publix

"Here’s why Publix has been one of FORTUNE® magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For" 12 consecutive years."

"We don't think you'll find a better Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) anywhere. Publix provides free stock each year for your retirement program, and allows associates to buy additional shares on their own. The value of Publix stock has appreciated an average of 17% annually since 1959. What other investment has retained that kind of value for the past 50 years?"

"One of the top 10 companies in the book, "The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America" (Currency/Doubleday, 1993)"

Lefty that I am, I like that the chain has a reputation for treating their employees well. I also think it says something that a lot of the people who started at Publix when they moved into my area in 2000 are still working there, and this is after a time frame when unemployment was undr 3% in the area for a couple years and they could have had their pick of many other different service/retail jobs if they'd wanted to leave.

They're also good with giving back to the community. When I worked for Meals on Wheels, they were always exceptionally generous about donations to my program.

I'm not a big Publix fan. A lot of their items are overpriced, in my opinion. I swear - making a sandwich ends up costing you like, 25 dollars if you shop at Publix.

You must buy high end stuff because that is pure exaggeration. I have found a lot of bargains at Publix. The stores are clean which can't be said for others that I have shopped in.

As for working at them, a friend of mine works at one and she gets inventory bonuses every few months. Also at Christmas time they get a bonus. She loves the hours she has. And if she wants she can transfer to the corporate office.

I am no big fan of Publix anymore but I will agree that they really do take care of their employees. I have a relative who has been a checker there for over 30 years and she loves it and has excellent benefits. I don't know how much money she makes because in my family it is verboten to discuss income and finance but she seems to be ok with whatever she does make.

I still prefer to shop at Sweetbay though.

Back to Publix...

I've heard that advancement is horrible in Publix. When I worked there they hired full time and I was hired full time but at the time, I didn't want to conform to their rules of no facial hair, no long hair, shirt tucked in, slacks ( no jeans ) ect, ect.. To me, that wasn't worth $6.50/hr.

Now, They only hire starting at 20-25 hours a week and the store closest to me said that everyone starts off bagging but I don't know if I believe that. I don't see how someone could work at Publix for 30 years unless they were management or their family didn't depend on their income to survive. To be honest, having stock in a company is nice but with the way the stock market has gone, It's not a huge drawing card to me.
