Back to Publix...
I've heard that advancement is horrible in Publix. When I worked there they hired full time and I was hired full time but at the time, I didn't want to conform to their rules of no facial hair, no long hair, shirt tucked in, slacks ( no jeans ) ect, ect.. To me, that wasn't worth $6.50/hr.
Now, They only hire starting at 20-25 hours a week and the store closest to me said that everyone starts off bagging but I don't know if I believe that. I don't see how someone could work at Publix for 30 years unless they were management or their family didn't depend on their income to survive. To be honest, having stock in a company is nice but with the way the stock market has gone, It's not a huge drawing card to me.

My son did not start off bagging, and he was making at least $1 an hour above minimum wage when he was first hired. Working in the meat or bakery departments you will easily make a living wage, and get f/t hours.

There was a woman in this thread that said her husband was trying to work at Publix somewhere in Florida but all they offered him was part time. I don't know when your son started but that's what they do now.
If you don't believe me, Give them a call.

For some departments, yes, there is likely only p/t. But for others there is f/t and they pay more than minimum wage. It's possible that the husband didn't have the skills they were looking for or any f/t positioins at that time. BTW--Publix offers health insurance to p/t employees who average 20 hours a week.

Publix has always been a high priced store in Fl. I was recently in Springhill, fl for a visit and did some shopping at the Publix near where we were at. The prices were alittle high . Moderator cut: consumer complaint Maybe I am just used to the people here in Kentucky that are always friendly at Krogers. Thanks!!

Publix
I know of people who have worked in all 3 - Publix, WD and Albertsons - and by far, they all said Publix is the cleanest. My family goes to Publix but we buy our meat from a meat market instead. I just grew up doing that. My dad owned restaurants at one time.

pretty much all big box retailers and publix do this in florida now. I got the same thing at Office Depot, max 32 hours, i.e. no benefits whatsoever.

Folks..
This is not the right place for consumer complaints. Such posts present defamation issues and they don't give the other side the opportunity to present their side of the argument.

It's not just Florida, it's EVERY state, and it's MOST retail. Retail has never been known for it's high paying jobs. Anyone considering a career in retail needs to accept the fact that they aren't going to get rich.

If you work hard enough you can advance at Publix. When a friend of mine first started working there she started as a bagger, then a cashier now she is working in a department. This all happened in her first year.
Your right you won't get rich working in retail but if that is what you love doing than who cares. I know people who have high paying jobs who are miserable because they are not doing what they love to do.

I think most people working in retail realize that. Some are happy doing those jobs, some do those jobs because that's all they know how to do. Unlike you, I don't look down on those people, or call them "lazy". On the contrary, you'll find some of the most genuine, "salt of the earth" kind of people working at those jobs.
