Um, where did I look down on someone working retail or call them lazy? I've worked retail for several companies, and know how hard it is. I also accepted the fact that it's not a career choice that pays well and didn't expect to make a decent living doing it.

Laughter is on a distinguished road
Default Publix bakery isnt what it use to be...

This is my personal experience with one item from Publix. This past year I went to Publix in JAX to buy the wonderful tasteing carrot cake that I normally buy. This time the cake wasnt available but there was a substitute. Well, this substitute tasted like a cake from a vending machine. When I went back I asked the lady at the bakery what happened to the quality of the cake. I was told that Publix no longer bake their cakes in their stores but outsource them...

eh, not quite true... i think it is more rural vs. urban... around big city centers they pay more, and u can commute there.

not a retail worker, but done it before... but just saying.

seems like a lot more stable workers in retail near big cities, esp up north, vs. the high turnover elsewhere.

florida doesn't really value these workers as much

north california for the most part is also not like this.

The Publix stores in my area are really nice, as are the people who work there. The stores are always clean. But they are more expensive compared to Walmart grocery prices or Sweet Bay or some Winn Dixie stores. They do have some great sales though and the produce is 100% better than most places.

I worked p/t in a major chain store in one of the largest malls in northern NJ--which is a "big city" area--for five years, quit right before I moved to FL. There were very few f/t people that worked in that mall, only management got f/t hours. I made $7 an hour after five years. It's not a Florida thing, it's not a southern thing, it's a retail thing.

About half of the employees at that store were long timers like me, the rest came and went with the changing of each season.

but the supermarkets in the NY area are unionized. They have signs in the windows stating it. The cashier, deli, etc., may be part time, but they will give union benefits. Yes, you have to pay union dues. I assume Publix and the others here are not union.

My daughter works in Loss Prevention. She has in supermarkets and retail. Her position is considered "management". Strange, but it is. Because of that, even in supermarkets, they are full time, 40 hour jobs with benefits.

We have heard that Publix is a good company to work for. When she first moved here, she tried to get an LP job at Publix. Unfortunately, the only one available was in Lakeland, but it was full time and was paying the same salary that she made in NY.

We went on Publix's corporate site when my daughter was looking for a job. Publix pays their "managemnt" very good money, for ANY state, never mind Florida. They also give them year end bonuses. You cannot beat that in these times. However, I don't know if those part timers receive all these "bennies".

This is more of what I am referring to... I wasn't trying to argue it is a great career path for most.

Actually the largest supermarket chain in NY is non-union. Wegman's.

Publix gives p/t employees health insurance, 401K benefits, profit sharing, and bonuses. They also get a day or two of vacation time a year. The big difference between p/t and f/t at Publix is that p/t employees don't get sick pay.

We had Waldbaums, Stop n Shop (New England chain), and King Kullen.

Wegmans are nice stores, I think they are based in Rochester, NY. They are expanding all over the east coast. We are scheduled to have one open in Massachusetts soon (hopefully).
