Which city in Florida is for me?
I'd like to move to Florida but I'm having a hard time figuring out which city. Cost of living isn't hugely important (I grew up in California so I'm used to ridiculous prices). Mostly I want to live in a suburb of a major city with some other people around my age. I'm 26 and single, so I need somewhere with somewhat of a night life. I was thinking Orlando or the Fort Lauderdale area. What do you think? What are the positives and negatives of each place? Is there a city better suited for me than Orlando or Fort Lauderdale? Thanks!

I'd pick FTL over Orlando, although I am not a big fan of either really. If I were you, I'd pick Jacksonville, if you want to live in a large metro in FL. Cheaper to live, friendlier people (in my opinion), you got the beach, easy access to I-95 so you can go visit other places throughout the Southeast quicker, especially if you are driving, etc.

I would have to agree with Rae a bit - I am not the hugest fan of Orlando at all. I actually like Ft. Lauderdale, but don't think that either place offer a great deal in the way of night life, but I grew up in NYC, so that is relative. Southbeach is great for Night life and being single Miami isn't the worst place in the world for you to live. You can live relatively close and be in a good neighborhood. I know little about Jacksonville, but hear it is thriving.

I think a young person coming here from California looking for nightlife would enjoy Miami the most, maybe South Beach?

Yep gypsy - I think so. I like SE Florida - I just wish there were more side walks. I really hate that you have to walk in the street in developments.

If you want a night life and a real major city near by than Ft. Lauderdal is your choice. I cant speak really for Tampa. But Orlando is okay and I would not really call it a major city. Miami is though. Also You cant compare the night life in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdal area with Orlando. Ft. Lauderdale basically is a suburb of Miami so you can live right in a urban area with out being in the middle of the "main" urban district. Ft. Lauderale Miami area has beaches minutes or even seconds away depending on where you live, Orlando si 45min away. There are many things to do in the area and it is a major global city unlike Orlando.

If you want nightlife and to live in a suburb, I'd go with a suburb of Fort Lauderdale. Even Orlando. Somebody said Jacksonville but there isn't much night life there (compared to Orl and FtL anyway), and Jax doesn't even really have any true suburbs, though there are many outer parts of Jacksonville that are suburban in feel.

You'd do better in Fort Lauderdale or Miami. Orlando I think you might like it, but to me its too kiddy and for people with families and tourist. Afterawhile it wears off unless your career is in the medical, tourist or disney industry. Lots of people from Miami go there to 'get away', but very few end up moving there.
Tampa and Jacksonville is geared more to families, fishermen, bikers and retirees, so I wouldnt be interested in neither of those. It has its night spots, but its limited and after a year or so you'll be upset about not having picked elsewhere. I cant see myself there and wouldnt recommend you
