Hi everyone!

I have spent some time browsing through past entries about relocating to Tallahassee, but I think it would help me to ask my own specific questions!

My husband and I are relocating to Tallahassee in August and I will be in graduate school at FSU. However, we have yet to figure out WHERE in the city we'd like to move.

I have seen a lot of planned communities and such, but I am wondering if anyone can give me any info about living in downtown Tallahassee? We are moving from a large-ish city and would really like to know if there are any condo/loft buildings with rental units downtown? Everything we've found in/around Tallahassee so far seems to be a little rustic. I was just wondering if there were any places that were a little more modern/industrial, before we come down in May and sign a lease.

I really liked the looks of the Adams St. Lofts, but I guess those are purchase-only.

Not much modern loft / apartments in Downtown. FSU is close to downtown, walkable (but uphill). There are mnay, many apartments and houses for rent around campus, even further. Not much in actual downtown though. Rail Road Square rings a bell, as an area next to downtown that might have some. Might.

Maybe Park Avenue just east of downtown. There are a good number of rental units there and it's close to downtown.

There are plenty of really nice places to live though, depending on your price range. Especially off of Thomasville Road.

For full service buildings like the kinds you would find in a big city, there is actually the Tennyson in downtown Tallahassee, as well as Plaza Tower. These are the only two I can think of, however!

As for "lofts" and such..... the "All Saints" area might have some options, but you might have to go through private listings.

I know that Plaza Tower rents at least short term (a friend of mine was a legislative assistant and lived there during session), so there are probably rentals available. A good lease agent should know.

There are condos to rent. If you are looking for "industrial" you are looking in the wrong city altogether. This place prides itself on having more trees than buildings.

Generally you want to say away from the immediate vicinity of campus, and the area just north of campus is bad (Frenchtown). The nicer areas are generally north and east of downtown. IF you really want to be close to downtown, there are condos and townhouses spotted around this area, especially between downtown and Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. If I were you I would check out the area bounded by Apalachee Parkway on the south, Meridian on the west, and I-10 to the north, as close in as you can get.

Tallahassee Center also has condos available.

Lots of different options, downtown surrounding downtown, and everywhere in between.

Thanks so much for all of the info! I really appreciate it. We're coming down the first week of May to hopefully find a place and sign a lease. My dream would be to find a gorgeous loft-style carriage house for rent, but we'll take what we can get. Thanks again!

we're in a similar situation. Want to live in an urban area but decent neighborhood. Just starting to look, it's hard to do it from out of state. Wondering if you found a good urban neighborhood.

I can't think of any part of Tallahassee that most people would consider "urban." That's more or less the charm of the place - there is little to no industry here.

The closest thing to "urban" and still nice would be the area I described above, just east of downtown. Either way, you will still be living more or less in a forest, because almost the whole city is a forest.
