Watch out for the whole dam state, it's not paradise! The insurance and taxes are ridiculous, the wages are the lowest in the country. The heat, bugs and traffic.....this place sucks no matter where you go!

Even though you pulled up a thread that hasn't been posted in for over 2 years I will respond to your posts.
As far as insurance, I pay under $700 for $335K in coverage. Not all too bad.
I don't have a big problem with bugs though there are some here certainly.
I pay $360 a year for pest control, that works out to $30 a month. Also not too bad if you ask me.
I have a nice big garden that I grow corn, peppers, beans, cantalope and more.
I also have a 3000+ acre preserve less than 3 minute walk from my house.
The school my children go to are just fine. Central HS has the #2 ROTC program in the nation. I am sure they would have been #1 last year but they probably didn't want to give #1 to the same school 2 years in a row.
Wages are not great but no where near the lowest in the country.
Traffic can be bad around the downtown areas but certainly not bad at all here.

Pine Island as they call it to me is gross, my son's bathing suit is permantly black from playing in the water. The water is warm as hell, nothing like east coast beaches.

Yeah, it's definitely not a beach and is a bit gross. I've been there a few times to watch the sunset and only one time was it nice and it was easter of 06, usually it's all mucky! Isn't it closed right now b/c the levels of bacteria are high? Yuck.

Pine Island
I was out to Pine Island last Saturday night after dinner, the place was crowded, people in the water, the wind was blowing, a little too cool for me, but everyone seemed to be having a good time. We went there for the sunset (which didn't happen too many clouds). We tried to get into Bayport even with extra new parking spots the place was also crowded.
I wonder if: the fact that Doggie/Soggy Day was just two weeks ago, if that had anything to do with the now high bacteria count? Just a thought.

I am not sure about the reason it is closed now. Didn't even know it was closed currently. However, the reason it was closed previous be because of the bacteria levels in the water. I read in an article that they werent sure if it was bird/animal bacteria or human bacteria. The problem is that the restrooms were not built to sustain the amout of "traffic" per say and that there is no sewer system in place - so yup, you guessed it, human waste could have been backing up into the water. And then they reopened it, saying that the levels were acceptable now. I don't know what they deem as acceptable, but I for one will never go into that water again until they put in some sort of sewer system.
