So the answer is to lower your standards to just about the Third World, and to carry a gun?
I think getting the hell out of Miami is a better option. There are a LOT more nicer places in Florida than Miami.

Yes, Miami is the third world since those are the folks who moved in and keep flooding in while middle class Americans are trying to leave. The same ones previously living in extreme poverty in Peru, Mexico, Cuba, and just about every other banana republic are now living in Miami and S. Florida in general.
The great thing about Florida is that it is perfectly legal and accepted to carry loaded guns in your car just in case. You can't even leave the house with one in many states without a permit. I think every one should pack heat. There would be less crime.

You might want to look at Ft Lauderdale, Boca Raton, Winter Park and Sarasota... You'll get much of what you want but without the Miami issues..
For me personally Sarasota is the nicest place in Florida.

We are fortunate that my husband can work from home; however, he needs to be close to a major airport. If anyone could offer some input on a city in Florida that is safe, friendly, cultured, close to the water, and with great schools, I would appreciate it. St Augustine maybe?

You guys should think about looking in other states. I can't think of another city here that fits your needs

Their are areas of Florida that are still wonderful and has a lot to offer. Check out these areas of Orlando that I am familiar with. Very nice areas, near some good public schools and safe. Try:
Windermere 34786, Dr. Phillips 32819, 32836. About 25 minutes from Orlando International Airport.
Also very nice, safe and good schools in Brevard county: Merritt Island 32953,32952, Rockledge 32955 and Viera 32940. Very good schools....Manatee Elementary, Suntree Elementary, Robert L. Stevenson, Tropical Elementary.....to name a few (all public schools). And also some Blue Ribbon private schools. About 1 hour away from Orlando International Airport. But culture......not so much.

Hello Mr. Floridian,
Not to be offensive, but isn't accepting this type of violence a bit apathetic? We are not a third world country and I refuse to live like we are in one. That is why I say move versus putting up with people who now find this to be "Normal."

Hi,
Sorry... I never meant say to accept Miami as normal. I lived in Colombia, Brazil and Spain and Costa Rica. I speak decent spanish and portuguese and I like diversity, therefore for me, Miami is ok but traffic and all the big city stuff does make it hard to live there. Check out Broward county, Plantation, Ft. Lauderdale to name a few.
Best of luck

Just move thirty five - forty five minutes North to Cooper City , Weston or Parkland .. you will still enjoy the weather , sun , fun and ocean .. but it is much more civil up here in my opinion and quite different from Miami ... I have been here with my family for nearly fifteen years and have never been robbed , or assaulted or even remotely witnessed a crime ... and except for two old Jewish guys from New York who beat the tar out of each other for a parking space at a Starbucks in Weston .. have never witnessed a violent act we had many neighbors in Weston from Europe ... Italians , Dutch and a family from England . Do not lose faith in all of South Florida because of Miami .
