Where did they go? NC, SC, GA, TN mostly; and some went to the Panhandle, NE FL, Central FL
Anyone reading this thread lived here at that time? Family of my wife's had. They are all northward, some in Central FL and some in NC. The one's in Central FL want to move to NC actually.
Where did all the Coral Gables born/reared all-Americans go? Probably the places I mentioned above. That is generally where they all went (NC, SC, and TN, GA).
One young Cuban guy was smoking a cig outside his house in the front yard as I strolled by... "how are you" I said... and the Cuban man said with a straight face matter of fact way "....I no speak english". On another street I finally found a white dude... he said with a smirk "you're not from these parts are ya... everyone left by the late 70s early 80s". He's right.
Comments?
It is what it is, I say move northward.

I would like to begin by saying that I find nothing wrong with the OP wanting to move somewhere else. However, she should know that the Miami area has some beautiful, safe areas like Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, East Kendall, Coral Gables, Miami Lakes, Aventura, etc.
Next, where on earth are you getting the information that Coral Gables has lost nearly all of its American-born whites? The 2000 census put Coral Gables at 92% white (about 48% of which were not Hispanic). The demographics of Coral Gables have not changed a lot in the last 9 years, and most non-Hispanic whites and a substantial amount of Hispanic whites in Coral Gables are American-born. In fact, only 38% of Coral Gables' residents are foreign born. And many of these foreign born people are old-time Cubans who have lived in this country for 30-50 years! It is very strange for me to hear that a white person would feel foreign walking around Coral Gables when the overwhelming majority of the population is white, the majority of the population is American, and the great majority of the population is at least Americanized and speaks English well or fluently.
I don't think the OP wants to flee the international vibe felt in many areas of South Florida. She wants to flee what she perceives to be a high-crime area, and I have no problem with that. I do have a problem, however, with people who fuel the xenophobic, anti-Latin fire that seems to be prevalent on these boards. Again, it wasn't the OP that introduced that element into this thread... it was many of the other forumers participating in this discussion. Run to Alpharetta, run to Cary, run to friggin' North Dakota if you choose, but don't patronize the hundreds of thousands of American-born and/or American-raised South Floridians solely due to their ethnic background. Myself and many others were born and raised in South Florida and are just as American as those of you raised in the Kansas or Georgia.

Thank you, you hit the nail on the head! We are leaning more towards leaving. I just feel nervous having future teens running amock here. Right now I can stay in a "bubble" isolate ourselves to Pinecrest, MB, Palmetto Bay etc, but eventually my kids are going to want to explore. My instincts tell me that I should isolate them a bit better. We can always visit and experience the Miami that attracts us and so many others to come here on vacation.

Pinecrest is a microcosm...perhaps the last bastion of normality in most of Miami, but it is expensive (property-wise) and even there, people are either leaving, or are being foreclosed on (there are so many "open house" signs, for example).
We are leaving Miami this time next year. It's been a wild ride and somewhat of a learning experience, but there's nothing for us here anymore.

BCreass is right, even the "good" areas are seeing a rise in crime. Someone asked me the other day, why none of the children are outside playing in the streets. I told her, because the parents will not let them (speeders, criminals, etc), this is East Kendall a good area. Someone I know in Coral Gables said they don't they children play alone even in the back yard anymore, for the fear someone would go into the backyard. Miami truly isn't a place to raise children anymore. I am sorry but we shouldn't feel so unsafe in our own backyards. Not to get off the subject, but I wish we had a three strikes you are out system, and on that third criminal act you are sent directly to jail for life. That would cut down on crime.

A lot of the criminals are illegals. They get deported and come right back the same night. They use different aliases and papers, etc. Thanks to our open borders policy our cities and kids have to suffer. And Osama Obama wants to give them all amnesty just to get their votes. I can't take any more.

We live in a nice neighborhood too, and what I dont get is why all the speeding? I can only go back to my other location in which I lived, which was Asheville NC, and there are plenty of young people, people from all over the country, etc... and I have never seen anything there like I do here. People speeding over twice the speed limit in residential neighborhoods, pealing out in your driveway as you leave, etc... I just dont understand what it is about certain parts of FL that seem to attract these people. I didnt see it in Asheville NC.

...because people here are c-nts, plain and simple. People talk about Miami drivers as if it's some sort of joke, but the reality is that it's nothing to laugh about. I blame two things here: 1) lack of law enforcement and 2) macho driving. People here tend to pretend that the problem doesn't exist though, which means that nothing is going to change anytime soon. As for me, I'm out of here....I don't need this kind of stress in my life and I'm tired of getting angry/frustrated about it.

People just don't care, that's the bottom line. At least, they don't care until it happens to them, or to someone they care about. Politicians here don't give a damn, neither do the police or the courts, apparently. It just seems to be the prevailing culture down here -- the laissez-faire approach to driving.
In all honesty, the drivers here are one of the main reasons why I want to leave. I don't need the stress, to be honest. I'd probably be more inclined to put up with it if 1) I were single and didn't have to worry about the safety of my wife and 2) I actually liked/tolerated living here in the first place.
