Default Becoming a FL Notary Public

I am in banking, spent most of my career in NYC and a little in NC. I am a Notary Public in both states. I lost my job in NC and I am now working for a bank in FL.

I want to become a Notary in FL, but it seems a little convoluted. When I took the NY Notary test in 1991 it was strickly a government related process. I studied a manual and paid the state fee, took a 100 question test and I was Notary. In NC I took a 6 hour class ($50-$75 or something like that) and a 50 question test at the end of the class, paid another $50-$75 for the license and I was a Notary.

Here in Florida it seems like a money maker for businesses that "prepare" you for being a Notary. Can anyone explain the process a little clearer? Can I just take the class and avoid the fees some of these companies want to "prepare" me to be a Notary? Can I just study a manual and take the test myself? Is a class necessary?

Thank you.

You go online, take an all-inclusive class and test, and you become a notary. I'm a notary... 90 bucks paid for the class and I THINK licensing fee, as well as my stamp, lol.

Literally took a couple of hours.
