i went to the tea party today in vero beach and an estimated 3,500 people showed up. that is amazing for a smaller town! it was an inspiring event and the speakers were excellent. i am proud of my country and the people in it! i was a little concerned that people were getting apathetic to our budget deficit and what this represented for our country in the future. it is clear that many people are aware and are willing to step up to do something about it! this is a grassroots organization that has sprung up by people who have never been politically involved in their lives! there will be a tea party in melbourne on the 19th if anyone is interested in attending.

Unless you make over 250K/year, you did not do yourself any favors going to that party!

this tea party was for average people who just want the government to spend responsibly. it is not based on income or lack of income for that matter. it certainly isn't too much to ask the government to read legislation before they sign it in the future or to live within its means as they expect us to do! i notice that our elected officials had no problem authorizing a raise for themselves when most americans are worried about keeping their own jobs. they are out of touch with the lives of working americans.

I saw pics from the one in PSL, looks like a good turnout all over. the one here in RI had about 1,500!
Unfortunately I work in finance and absolutely have to work the 15th.

The remarkable thing, to me, is how many of the critics missed the mark. It's not just about taxes- although no matter what one makes they are FAR too high, and the tax law far too complex. It's about the bailout of huge corporations, increasing big government, intrusive government, bowing to Saudi kings, creating destructive lending rules for mortgage providers that encouraged risky lending, robbing the working man and woman and giving the money to the able but unwilling. It's not right or left, Democrat or Republican.

The tea parties are definitely a great idea. Hopefully they will be the start of bringing about real change we need. The one in Atlanta drew something like 20,000 people. Great job!!

I don't think Obama's change is what people had in mind. He and Pelosi did the whole time but not the voters who put him in office. He's just giving away the shop.....our shop. And now amnesty for illegal Hispanics just to get their huge vote. Give me a break. This clown makes Jimmy Carter look good. Pitiful.

Grass roots opposition is great and Hannity is doing a great job keeping people informed of the facts. Obama and Pelosi have to go plain and simple.

you are so right that it is bigger than just a tax issue. it is a government spending problem. people don't mind paying their taxes when they feel that the money is well spent, but when it has been mismanaged and abused like we are currently seeing people have a right to protest and to demand change. i feel really encouraged by the turnout around the country by average people who took out time from their already busy schedules to make a statement collectively, regardless of political party.
i also agree that the tax law really needs to be simplified!

Then tell your Gov. to stop spending! Make Florida the example-don't take ANY of the stimulus. Show the rest of the US how you can do it on your own!

Agreed that this is much more than a tax issue. In fact, effective US federal tax rates are relatively low, though to be sure the tax code is excruciatingly complex and the potential for oppressive tax rates going forward is imminent.

The real issue is a ruling class that has lost its creativity and its moral justification for ruling.

To a large extent, this loss is reflected in the spending side of fiscal policy and not just spending, but outright theft. The US ruling class has degenerated into a sterile kleptocracy, thereby, in a sense, depriving the nation of its exceptionalism and relegating it to the mainstream of human history (dark and cruel), also reflected in the fact that it is no longer willing to take on the responsibility of real productive investment on its own soil.

If anything, at the present time, I would argue that taxation is excessive at the local level, in the case of Florida property taxes, and that local spending is just as reckless as spending at the federal level.

A question to those who attended: was there any focus on local taxes and spending?

Who knows? Maybe real change will come as soon as 2010 (echos of 1994). But the grassroots will have to keep the momentum going for another 18 months, no easy task.

Godspeed!

Let me understand, it's time to raise hell over "mismanaged money" now. Where in the world were you and others when our economy was being mismanaged for the prior 8 yrs? Where was your outrage with goverment over the giveaways to the rich, illegal and costly wars, illegal spying, deficit spending, turning a blind eye to the gathering storm of the banking/mortage/wall street fiasco etc. Now you and others "find your voice". Forgive me but I have no patience for your complaints.
