On topic. Is it safe to say that North Florida is extremely Southern, but changing along the coastline?

yes the stretch from greater destin then skip a bit to some of panama city beach along the coast isn't really southern anymore in a lot of parts. lots of snowbirds. I'd have absolutely no problem living in FWB/Destin it is small to be sure but it has the best shopping/dining from the range of new orleans to the east to jacksonville to the west and atlanta to the north and the best beaches imho in the continental united states... take a drive up to Crestview? Shoot me!

One can make the case for best beaches, but better shopping and dining than greater Birmingham or even Mobile ?

I'm trying to think of stores that Okaloosa County doesn't have but the Mobile area does and that I'd actually want to go to on a regular basis and am coming up with a World Market (love their junk foods of the world section) and like two stores at that open air mall in Baldwin County. The area may not have as many people as Mobile, but it's got the right demographics for many businesses.
Median household income estimates 2007-
Mobile County $37,575
Baldwin County- $49,163
Escambia County- 41,772
Okaloosa County- $54,633
As for Crestview, we wrote that area not too long after we moved down here in the late 90s because there was an actual cross burning in a black family's yard. It's a nice place as long as you stick in FWB/Destin/Niceville/the South Walton Beach areas. North of I-10 be madness in my book, no matter how cheap the housing is.

sorry left birmingham out, was just thinking as far north as atlanta on the map and birmingham is well up there (on that same radius)...... not so sure about mobile... if you think so perhaps... I don't have THAT much experience there but didn't think it was a gem in these areas.

I think the southerness to the panhandle and north FL is great. If you want the other lifestyle where you came from, driving fast, in a hurry just to sit at a red light, head to Orlando or Miami.

IMO, Pensacola would be the most southern and then it gets progressively less West to East, with Jax being the larger city that it is, not being as southern. Destin and Panama City have all those ATLiens moving down, and most of them are not even from ATL. Pensacola is a slow grower. Tally has many students from S FL, and many end up staying for a while. Gainesville, same, but I feel like there is a greater percentage of students from S FL at FSU. Places like Ocala are growing real fast with south Floridians and northerners, and people are moving there for the laid back southern culture, so that should not change as rapidly because that seems to be what people want. Jacksonville has that to a little degree, but since it is a larger city, it is a complete clash of cultures all around. You can find south, north, Hispanic, African American, etc all here, and it seems to be more of a mixture. People in Jax like to try to combine the best elements of them all. The bigger Jax gets the better it is going to be, and it is growing faster than S FL and Tampa as far as percentage growth is concerned. I guess if you like homogenuous cultures like Doral/Sweetwater (almost all Hispanic) or Palm Beach (almost all northern), then Jax is not for you because we have those interspersed with plenty of natives. Everyone gets along.

Cross Burning. I saw that South of Phenix City on my way down but not in Fla. That's what Little Nicky would call the Deep South.

^^Ha I have driven that route from Atl to Panama City for a fraternity weekend! One last thing, I will say the only place I have seen/see evidence of the KKK was north of Panama City just south of the Alabama border, we had to clear the road for the parade they were having! We even had 2 Jews in the car
