I'd have to visit CLT again before I could say yes or no definitively, but if it's like S FL, then I'd pass, definitely.

You should visit it...charlotte is beautiful especially in the Fall and Spring, the trees in the spring are gorgeous....and South Charlotte is quite lovely as well, with lots of shopping...Ballantyne is a newer area, and now are getting alot of the box stores..
although I still have a sore spot for PALM TREES and Being able to drive 20 min to the beach...I dont like to sit on it but dh and I and the kids like to walk the beach....lol

I'm pretty familiar with CLT, just havent visited in a few yrs. As far as "big city" living, I think it is probably the best there is. Far better than the Miami's, Tampa's and Orlando's...
Yes, Ballantyne, York and Lancaster counties, all those little areas are pretty nice and affordable IMO... except for Lake Norman. I'd take Wylie over Lake Norman, less crowded and cheaper too. Atleast it was.

I've been seeing this census bureau lady alot lately. I'm building a house in a really high end beach community. All last week a census taker would pull her car in, park in the same spot and then just walk around the resort all day. I didn't see her actually engage one homeowner. She parked in the same spot and would just walk. She waved at me everyday and I'd give her the .
I can't imagine what her statistics reports are going to say other than, "nice beach - the cafe has good rubens - when can I conduct further inspection"

Well that lady is making her way down to Sarasota also.lol I saw someone leaving the entrance to my front door asked if I could help her, she said census. She never asked one question. Not really sure why she was at more door either the number of my house is on the mailbox when you pull into the driveway.

At this part in the census cycle, they're probably trying to figure out how many people they're going to have to hire for 2010. Could be she was assessing whether it was a long term or vacation rental area in order to estimate how many counters they'd need. (long term=getting people to fill out the full form, short term you don't need as many because you can check like three boxes and move on to the next big condo building)

When my grandfather was trying to provide for his family during the great depression the government was putting people to work building highways. Now, walking highways.

Hi Berryjuice, yes there are definitely some nice areas around Charlotte. My wife isnt as thrilled with Charlotte though. Not sure why. We both really like Asheville, Greenville, and also the Alpharetta/N GA area... Alpharetta (in my mind) is a good mix of both Asheville/Greenville and Florida. There are a large mix of folks in Alpharetta from all over (similar to FL) but also has more of that southern feel than FL does (atleast for the most part) and friendly folks with awesome scenery (similar to Asheville/Greenville). And ATL has a better, more diverse economy than FL. The only thing I dont like is the traffic.

I have a large business account in Alpharetta Ga and they moved from all places?? Charlotte to the Atl burbs. Yes the traffic is crazy and the airport is even worse.
Asheville is beautiful but the temps can get very cold being close to the mountains like it is.
If you have never been to the Biltmore Estates in Asheville make sure you check it out. Awesome!
Atlanta is doing better then most other major cities. Charlotte had it going but lost its feel and many jobs due to problems in the city planning.
Atlanta seems to be picking up where Charlotte lost out.
