And some of it is very specialized indeed. Between that and the security clearance issues, it can be hard to break into that world, but if you do manage to break that wall, there are some good opportunities.

A lot of employers tell me they have trouble finding qualified candidates that can even pass a simple background check in Florida. Lots of criminals here.

If it was just simple background checks, it would be no big deal. The big issue with security clearances is $$$- the figures I've heard is that it starts at $25K and goes quickly upward if you're a civilian contracting company and need to get one of your employees a security clearance that lets them work with DoD classified and top secret information. So if you aren't bringing your clearance from an active duty military or civilian civil service job, you've got to be really good at what you do to be worth it for a private company to get you a security clearance.

And the investigators are very thorough. We've had people show up at our door to ask questions about the kid who used to live down the street from us before he graduated from high school in 1999. (Sorry, didn't buy the house or live in the neighborhood until 2001)

That sounds majorly thorough but obviously necessary. Obama and most of his tax evasion cabinet probably would not even pass this sort of vetting process. We can never be safe enough these days though.
