As a renter you can't insure the structure, only your contents and your personal liability. You also can't obtain flood insurance for your contents. Something to think about.

Renters insurance is relatively inexpensive. Obviously renters insurance is only for your personal belongings. The house or apartment you live in is covered by the landlord/management company. Providers of renters insurance is Allstate & State Farm. Renters insurance is actually a great thing to get, because if you have a leak in your apt. and it ruins your things, you will be covered. The landlord/management company is not responsible for your personal belongings. I work as an assistant manager for an apartment community, I can't tell you how much we stress the importance of renters insurance.

I agree it's important and we always had it when we were renting--we got ours through Allstate and got a discount because we also had our cars with them.

Again, keep in mind that you can't buy flood insurance for renters, and your regular renters insurance won't cover flooding. (Broken pipes are not flooding--flooding comes from outside.)
