I just visited fla, from Tampa to Sarasota, have been to south florida last year. As far as St Pete being a mecca for elderly retirees, I don't know if people have blinders on or what, there is as many young people there as here in Portland, a magnet city for yuppies. I think you will find more health conscious types in the south fla, Ft Lauderdale Miami area. I used my membership from 24 hour fitness when I visited there, they had several clubs in that region. I was not quite sure if they had whole foods or they were getting them there. I did not spend much time there it was very expensive. I found the St Pete area was more affordable and seemed like a nice beach city with a fairly nice downtown. I didn't get the impression of really health concious there, there was no whole foods there I was told, GNC was it. I will say they have some very well equipped Golds Gyms there, 3 of them. One of them has been used several times for photos and articles for fitness and bodybuilding mags. There is one that some of the wrestlers work out at, the employee told me. All in all though you sound like a south florida type guy to me, so that is probably where you will end up. You just really need to take a long look at the different areas, then when you get home it will all fall into place for you. It did for me, I never moved there even though every year when the rains come here, and the dark days never seem to end, I get this I am moving to Florida routine going, and I end up doing nothing more than visiting there. Good Luck.
