People leaving Florida for gainful employment
Does anyone know at least a person or two who are leaving Florida because they cannot find decent employment here? By decent I mean a good paying professional job with benefits. Not fly-by-night sales, retail, construction, etc.
It is a shame but I was at a party this afternoon and no fewer than 3 people are relocating out of state for work. One is a fireman, the other a teacher, the other a mortgage broker. Very educated and ambitious people. They had been out of work for nearly 1 year and just could not stay any longer. One is going to Charlotte, the other to Atlanta, the other to Dallas.
Very sad situation here. How many people do you know in the same situation and what are your thoughts?

A lot of my wife's friends who, many of which, are nurses, a lot of them are leaving/thinking about leaving/have already left. A couple to GA, the West coast, and I just met a really nice friend of her's that wants to move with her husband to Charlotte.

You say that as if there were jobs here that have somehow disappeared. There has never been good jobs here beyond construction. There is no industry here and never was. Few large corporations have their head quarters here. Florida is what it is. It is a tourist state and retirement state.

I've met some younger people who grew up here trying to start a corporate career for themselves and not really getting anywhere (low pay, no advancement). Honestly they'd be better off trying to do that in another state but they passively stay on here because their families are here.

I mistakenly said one person is a mortgage broker in my original post. She is actually a mortgage underwriter. Big difference.

Do you know why nurses would be leaving the area? I know there is a nursing shortage, it seems, everywhere so I am sure they should be able to get employment. I also realize the pay is less, but there are other unmeasurable "benefits" to balance that.

I know many that have left back to the Northeast and Texas for better wages and jobs.

I dont think it has much to do with their profession. Florida's very transient. I think some folks want to move northward toward Ga and the Carolina's for different reasons... different scenery, less people, milder weather, and other things. Not sure what you mean by unmeasurable benefits. (?)

I'm one of those hoping to move to Florida in the near future, and willing to make less money to do that. I am looking forward to the beaches, the people and the lifestyle and willing to make some changes for those benefits that I see. I grew up in San Diego and really miss the ocean, but prefer the feel of the smaller town of Pensacola with a bit more laid back atmoshere. Homes are less expensive than where I live now, so I don't think the slight decrease in pay will matter much. Besides, I don't think I will need to vacation as much as I do now always trying to get to the beach!

Find out the average costs of homeowner's insurance in Pensacola (and the property tax) for the type and price of house you want before you make a decision. It might be okay but you don't want to get a nasty surprise.
