I rented an attached home for 8 months and the lease was supposed to end May 15th so we signed a year extension which would run from May16th 2009-May 16th 2010. Today the owner says he is cancelling the lease because he believes it will sell better with no one in it. Is he legally able to do this after eveything has been signed?

I do not believe so unless there is a provision in the lease you signed. Usually the new owner who buys the house has to honor the lease as well. Read the lease very carefully or see a lawyer. This sounds bogus.

A lease is a contract, so no, most likely not, unless the lease says otherwise. In this case, tell him you will be more than happy to have your leasehold interest "bought out" for one or two months rent equivalent.

If the shoe was on the other foot, and you wanted to break the lease early, you would not be able to do so without his permission, or without paying the balance of what would be owed on the lease had you followed the contract through.

Probably you may have some legal standing but it would be best to just make a deal for a few months till you can find another place. He is probably being sincere. He has changed his mind so I would respect that. Find another place, thats life.
