The Hood
I'm reading a lot of answers to the question " Is Florida a good place to relocate?" I thinking of moving there from Milwaukee and I know I won't be making a lot of money to start. Here I lve in the "inner city" but there are a lot of areas in Milwaukee that's very quiet, no crime areas. I would like to know if I move in the "inner city in Orlando, or the "ghetto" how safe would I be?

The Orlando Sentinel has an interactive crime map of Orlando that you can look at. Pine Hills, Parramore and parts of Sanford is where a lot of violent crime occurs. But there is someone who posts on here (user name Granny, I think) who lives in Pine Hills and seems to like it.

Thanks for the input. As I said I live in the "hood" here in Wisconsin so I understand that crime is everywhere. But what I need to know is the crime in Orlando like "don't come out your house after 9 p.m. or **** happens just like everywhere else?

Orlando doesn't really feel that bad, but it's the kind of place that you move to where one might be burglarized 5 times, mugged in a strip mall parking lot, and see home invasions and lethal robberies on the news on a nightly basis. Crime in Orlando is very widespread and aesthetics often have no correlation to local crime rates in the area (see Metrowest, Waterford Lakes, etc). That being said, most people who move to Orlando will be just fine as long as they exercise common sense and do end up picking the right neighborhoods.

I would find some places in particular that you would be interested in and get the addresses. Then you call the local police department and ask for crime stats from those areas - they will tell you everything! From what I know you can call any police department to get that. I live in sanford and the Sanford PD gave me the stats for the apartment community that I live at.

In no particular order, I would say the worst areas for crime are Parramore, Metrowest, Bithlo, Pine Hills/Orlo Vista, anything off of South Orange Blossom Trail, and the Oak Ride area. These areas are not all necessairly "da hood", in fact Bithlo is over 90% white and Metrowest is a very nice looking area of newer upper scale subdivisions. In all honesty, most (not all) of Orlando and Orange County except for downtown/Thornton Park/College Park, Winter Park, Maitland, Dr. Phillips, Windermere, Hunters Creek and Eastwood/most of Waterford Lakes could be considered above-average in overall crime. Most of Orlando does not really have a "ghetto" feel, the high crime comes more from the area's transience and strange economic structure. The best piece of advice is in the post above above!

That's Oak Ridge (not Ride) just to clarify. I would add also add Rosemont (near Pine Hills). Also, the area of Kirkman Rd and Raleigh St (would be Orlo Vista). Some areas of Sanford are really rough too.
As a woman (with kids?) I would be very careful trying to move to the "inner city" or "ghetto" as you termed it. You kids will be around the roughest characters and that could easily rub off. Also, the schools are bad. (the newspaper today said one of the local high schools has only 15% of kids reading on grade level (granted, it was an improvement from 5% in years past) It was either Evans of Jones High, I can't find the article right now.
Just something to think about. Also, you might be renting from someone who lives far away and refuses to keep the property in even half-way decent shape.
