New law sends bad drivers to traffic school - Bay News 9 (http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2009/8/5/504989.html - broken link)

So it will take 3 crashes until they go to school? WOW! Why don't we award them for being alive after those 3 crashes too! How much worst can this get really????

I agree with you but it is better than now. It will cost them time, money, and hopefully some humiliation which results in better driving behavior.

but wait, if the BAD driver died because of his/her BAD driving.....will they send them to school post mortem (sp) anyways???? driving school is like $20 bucks! they won't even know they had to pay that!?? or they won't pay it and it will go on their bad credit and they could care less!

A bad driver is exactly that, it doesn't matter how many times they go to school......

THE CAR HAS TO BE CONFISCATED FROM BAD DRIVERS! Not send them to school! if they were interested in learning good driving they wouldn't have been bad drivers!!!!!!!! these are people with multiple violations, not mistakes once in a blue moon!!!!!!!!!

The hell with school. I've always said the goverment should do it just like the commercial trucking industry. Those who drive 18-wheelers are held to strict standards and any accident they get into is classified a preventable or non-preventable. Even if they only get 2 minor preventables they are pretty much out of the industry for good and even 2 or 3 non-preventables will get you tossed as well. Same should apply to passenger cars, get the morons off the road.

DUI in Florida is a joke. A woman who drove drunk with no driver's license and killed a young mother got 13 yrs just last week.

She also tried to leave the scene on foot and she had her own 4 yr old daughter in the car and no car seat.

It is a joke here. They drive with no car insurance, suspended DLs, and get away with it.

If Florida would start impounding cars like other states it would make a huge dent in the problem. But Florida is the land of reactive not the procactive.

Never heard of so many school bus crashes like there are here.

It should be written into FL law that all transplants have to keep the tags on their car issued from thier home states and then the good drivers would know who to watch out for, as it is now there is no warning.

They come down from NY,NJ, CA, don't have a clue as to where they are going, they run people over in parking lots, drive through storefronts, drive around on cocktails and medication, they just don't care.

As for impounding cars , not a bad idea but the state can't do that because it would be considered profiling so all the newcomers who flop in from OH, CA,MI,IN, Ny, etc. would cry it's unfair. They roll up their bumsacks and blankets throw em in the trunk and bring just enough to get here and have no money for insurance.

Impound the car? That wont deter anyone.

How about forfeiture like in the case of drug trafficing. The Feds do it so why don't the local law enforcement offices do it too. The seized cars can be sold at auction with the proceeds going to support law enforcement efforts. It could be a self funding department. Everyone wins

Ok, maybe just a bit radical, but how about seizure on the second offense. First offense can be impoundment with a hefty fine say 2k to release the car.

Also how about enacting legislature like other states that make the insurance agencies report every dropped policy to the DMV within 2 days. Failure to report the drop and the original insurer is on the hook even though the policy is no longer in effect. The DMV would get a daily list of people with dropped insurance and they could immediately suspend their tags until a new proof of insurance is on file. It would add a little more administrative overhead to the DMV, but at the same time would eliminate a huge percentage of uninsured drivers.

Exactly. And it works. Let me tell you if their cars are impounded and they are left on the side of the road they will find a way to get car insurance.

Most states do that. They get the car back when they have proof of insurance. They learn their lesson because it isn't cheap to get a car out of impound.

There is no incentive here. They get a ticket, they don't pay it, eventually the DL gets suspended, they still keep driving.
