We have a mountain house where we ski in the winter and spend part of the summer. There is one Mexican restaurant, but NOT ONE Mexican family in the whole town. I know anyone can learn recipes but you are so lucky to have all of that ethnic diversity. I can hardly wait to get down there and make me some new friends!

I think his point was that the Mexican population is a SOURCE of the racism that makes him uncomfortable...

Yes I believe that is what he meant, well if its any consolation, thousands of mexicans, seem to tire of California also, and move on up here to Portland and the rest of Oregon.

Flroida has changed a lot...still a long way to go
I think Florida has changed a lot and is getting better in terms of attitudes towards gay people.
I'm in Jax, and even here in Deep South, I think things are getting better for gay couples. There is still a long way to go, and some parts of Jacksonville, well, some parts of town look pretty hopeless, but overall I think there is a "live and live" attitude.
In all of the neighborhoods I've lived in on the Southside of Jacksonville, I have had gay neighbors (gay men and lesbian couples). They just blended right in along with everyone else...I doubt if my other neighbors even noticed that they were gay couples. Really, everyone is too busy to care.
Jax still has a l-o-n-g way to go though - we are nowhere near as progressive as NYC, LA or Miami.

Wilton Manors, yes.
A friend just worked construction in WM and said they have: Gay-Mart, Dairy Queen and the rainbow banners. What a hoot! Yes, WM is predom. gay.
I have to give it to the gays as they, for the most part are clean, friendly, keep lovely decorated cribs, their gardens are fabulous and again, for the most part, are humane individuals.
I'm a straight gal but I'd rather have most gays as neighbors than some (like my current neighbors) who leave their dog's **** on my lawn. Could use your help with the latter.

A friendly suggestion....
Start your own 'hood. Find a town with lots of real estate for sale (I know several and prices are cheap) and move a bunch of like-minded friends and family into that area. Before you know, you've created a niche for like minded folk.

Oh, apparently there has also been an influx of gays into the Lake Worth area.... doing exactly as House4Sale is talking about.... renovating blighted areas! "Gayification" in progress to turn the rundown into the habitable and trendy for tomorrow's young urban professionals. It's a cycle being played out across the country, really.
At any rate, Ft. Lauderdale, be it the Wilton Manors neighborhood/town or not, is still the gayest place in Florida. Except Orlando during the first weekend in June!

I think the previous poster was explaining that the Mexicans he has encountered and seen in the media are angry, hate "Gringos" and other races, have an entitlement attitude, and act as though the Reconquista is complete already. They are also bankrupting many hospitals and taking an unfair amount of social services.

Wilton Manors
Wilton Manors is now the gay mecca in Ft Lauderdale. There are other parts of Ft Lauderdale, and to be honest the whole place is very gay friendly. As real estate shot up, many gays flocked to this part of town because it was cheap. However, Wilton is very suburban in look and many gays bought up old florida style houses and have been gutting them and redoing them. WM has begun to attract the type of investment gays like (loft style apartments with shops below, more density). In say 10 years WM will look more city chic but it is still a very very suburban style place.
The hot club George's Alibi, gay mart, etc...are located in a strip mall, so as you can see WM is not Seattle, or San Fran walkability type place but it is a laid back place, great weather, 10 mins to beach etc...
