People are suggesting Florida for this guy
http://www.city-data.com/forum/gener...s-dropout.html
He is 17, no job, HS diploma or money. A surprising number of people are suggesting Florida, although most of the posts suggest going back to school.
I just found it interesting. You should look at his other posts for his outlook on life.

fl sounds good for him, as I said before, fits right in, lots of h.s. drop outs here he can be a commodity worker just like the rest of them. fl is good for the poor and the rich, not so much for middle class.

Florida is a good place for him. Very low cost of living and tons of community colleges and technical schools. Plus our economy is fairing better than most in the nation right now.

Let him stay where he is and finish HS first. Besides which, at 17 he is not even legal age yet. He will be unable to do anything without his parents consent.
Bottom line, he is going NOWHERE without a HS diploma or GED. He will not be able to go to CC or even a trade school ANYWHERE without either of those.

I agree with you due to the age issue. But when he turns 18, a change of scenery might be good for him. Isn't he already getting a GED in his current location, which he will presumably have before he moves to Florida?

How do you know? At his age and assuming there may be even more medical advancements in the future he is likely to live another 80 years. For all you know coming to Florida will be the best thing he ever does. For all we know it may the the best thing to ever happen to Florida to have this young man come here. He may start a company, build an industry be the most important person ever in the state. He has a life time to do many things, make mistakes, learn new things, see things through new eyes and from different perspectives.
People tend to give advice based on their own wants, needs, fears, values that may not apply to others. A kid his age can do anything he wants and probably not be making a mistake. The last thing you want to see him do is fall into someone's else's mold of limits and fears. Not every one are worker ants, many are leaders. free thinkers and often come from the most humble and unlikely places. There are few decisions this kid may make that he can't make adjustments in as circumstances dictate. What did Woody Allen say, "80% is just showing up".

Does he know anyone here? Does he have any money he can use to support himself while he looks for a job, probably a minimum wage job if he is lucky? If he wants to go to CC or a trade school, where he is going to get the money to pay for it or live on while he is there. Also, he has to be a resident for what at least 6 months to enroll in school as a Florida resident? State schools are very, very strict when it comes to declaring someone under the age of 21 a resident when their parents are in another state. That is one of the reasons I stayed in NY while my daughter was in a state college and my husband had moved to Florida. I as her Mom was the legal resident.
However, this is a disaster waiting to happen at his age and without any support system or plan.

I had friends here who I could live with. I had been working for 4 years and had money in the bank. Still, I could not get a job here, but at least I had money, and friends, to support me.
There are people here with HS, BA's, and years of working experience who are out of work. Up against them, who will an employer hire? The vast majority of us on this forum tell people looking to move here to secure a job before they come here. It is very sound advice. How is he going to do that?
Time is on his side. He needs to set a plan and work on his objectives, not just abandon everything to chase an unrealistice dream at the age of 17.

They are not strict, there is simply a process which must be followed. I agree with you for the reasons you stated above but you assume he has a support system where he is currently located. It could be living in a really bad environment and his only hope to better himself would be to leave that environment. Not everyone is as good a parent as you are so you can't always assume his parents have his best interest at heart.
I strongly think this is an issue as what parent in their right mind would let a kid drop out of high school and allow their kid to move to Florida at the age of 17.
He has already stated that he is going for a GED, and he's going to be 18 in a few months. Eighteen is a perfectly legitimate age to move away from your parents and start you own life. Florida has excellent community colleges and technical schools for someone in his shoes, and if he follows the process correctly, he would be able to qualify for in-state tuition after one year of working in the state.
