We also were in Clearwater Beach 2 weeks ago, and we loved the area but the water can't compare to the water in Daytona. We do like both coasts though. More to do in Clearwater. But we are considering relocating to Port Orange.
Personally, I'm not a fan of Clw. Beach. I was in Ft. Lauderdale last month and thought the beach was more beautiful than I'd seen it in a long time. My point with the banter is that it's like so many folks forget that Florida also has a southern coast. The beaches here argueably (obviously) beautiful. No murkiness...just beautiful. But of course, you didn't like the "nature".

Ok, it seems each of us has different opinions on what makes a great beach. For me the top priority is clear water! Next is low wave action. Like the Bahamas. I hate cold water. Sand type doesn't really matter much to me. It's fun if there are shells too.
I like the calmness of the Gulf Coast but I haven't experienced clear water there. This is Sanibel, Naples and Marco. I've been wanting to go to the Panhandle but I'd be really let down if the water was murky. A friend of mine went a few years ago and she said they had a couple of clear days and more murky days.
Also, not all the Atlantic is always wavy. I've been to Jupiter lots of times and the water's been very calm, just like I like it!

Yeah, but they have rude people in Ft. Lauderdale.

Next time you make your way down, check out North Beach in Hollywood. The water is usually even more turquoise than Ft. Lauderdale and it has an unspoiled natural look (no condos!). Crowds are usually light.
