Just a suggestion in regards to the Windstorm portion of you rHOI or the Windstorm Policy. Seek credits that may be due to you. Legislation was passed in 2002 that stated that all underwriters were required to offer discounts on the windstorm portion of the policy. Most homeowners are due creidts/discounts and are unaware of it.

Structural and architectural features present can equate to real discounts. I am not an insurance agent, but an architect that does Windstorm Mitigation Inspections as a side service. For a few hundred bucks you can get a licensed architect, PE or Contractor to inspect your home fill out and verify the appropriate forms. Make sure they know what they are doing.

Features such as truss to wall connections, sheathing to truss attachments, roof covering, secondary water protection, roof shape, shutters. The forms are pretty simple. I have seen discounts exceeding 35% of windstorm policy. Almost every inspection i perform the homeowners receive credits. Pursue your agent for forms. It can work retro also.

Regards,
Ryan

We did it.After getting a notice that Allstate was not renewing us we called tower Hill that I saw on this board and we went with them.We also got the pleasure to call allstate and cancel two months prior to the policy end date and it is done before hurricane season.we will only be paying $300 more then what we paid Allstate. One less worry.

It was with great pleasure when I called Allstate to cancel my homeowners and auto policy early.... I had only been with them for almost 40 years...

Thanks for the info Ryan.

I'm all for the discounts, but it seems the only things that my insurer had for discounts (on this particular house) were a hip roof discount and a general "new home" discount. I would think that these 2 things would cover all the discounts you mentioned above (trusses, etc.). Do you think there are really discounts beyond this?

riveree....I would ask them to qualify what 'new home' discounts equates to.

I am amazed at how insurance underwriters are allowed to do what they do....

but if there 'new home' discount is accurate then you should be provided the appropriate discounts as the current Florida Building Code mandates most or all of the elements that 'harden' a home....which the insurers are interested in.

Thanks.

I'll have to find out. I know my car insurers of past have missed a few discounts, so it's entirely possible my home insurer could have.

I'm happy with my rate overall, but I'd still like to be sure I can't do better.
