Ah ha.. a thread right up my alley.
I am born and raised Floridian for 46 years.
The other 7 years were spent in upstate NY (Adirondacks) Mass, Maine, and lastly, the Myrtle Beach area of SC.
I just got back here 3 days ago, looking for a place to live. I used to live in the Merritt Island area for 7 years and am looking to stay in the same area. Expanded my options to Melbourne/Cocoa Beach.
If that fails, I am looking towards the Kissimmee area.
But..
reasoning why I came back?..
I think Fla is just in my blood.. as much as the reasons why I left are the heat, humidity and the hurricanes, I just cant get this feeling out of my system.
To live in a place for 50 years, to know the state, to understand...
I hated the redneck type of people there in sc. They arent friendly... They say the south is, but no its not.
They have no manners, well, the younger generation doesnt.
I am tired of a backwards town where they have babies at 16, chew tobacco and get on their John Deere tractors and head off to the hunting camp.
I am not into the redneck/country lifestyle.
I am a city girl, born and raised for 30 years in Miami--early 50's-mid 80's.
I am not leaving again.

Tara, as a former South Carolinian, I understand. There are very few places in SC I would live....primarily Greenville or Charleston. Welcome home!

I was considering moving out of Florida to SC. Some family here and there now. Went up to SC and decided if any place maybe Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Murrells Inlet but after making about 6 or 7 trips up, staying @ motels and checking out jobs, houses and looking for performing arts type city decided against SC.
When you consider how many months people in snow climates have to put up with snow and cold then compare that to 4-5 months of putting up with high humidity - I'll keep the humidity to snow and cold.

The humidity is bad...it's about as bad as it gets this week. The temps here in Orlando have been in the upper 80's to low 90's but with the humidity - it feels like 98. DH took a few days off to catch up on some of his Honey Do list!! YEAH! He's been working outside for the past two days....and I mean ALL day - from morning until it's too dark to see. I've joined him for breakfast, lunch and a little siesta by the pool, and done some outside projects of my own. It's been hot, but doesn't seem unbearable to me. I guess I've gotten used to it over the years. Another few weeks and the weather will start changing again to Florida's glorious fall and winter and spring.

Summers are hot and humid, you're absolutely right, but we don't have to shovel or salt it down!

I grew up in the Central FL area (Longwood/ Lake Mary) and lived there for 30 years. I also lived out in Clermont with my husband for a few years. We left in June 2006 and made a nice sum of $ on the sale of our house. So here we are in Northeast Georgia and it's getting old fast. I really do not like the weather here. It's wet and cloudy day after day from Nov-March. It drizzles rain for days. I really miss those FL thunderstorms where it all lets loose for a few hours but then clears up! Not here...
Sure, you have hurricanes in FL but you get ample warning.
Also, we have bare trees from Nov-April! So depressing! Right now it's about 45 degrees on March 16th with grey skies and bare trees. Of course, spring is nice here when all of the trees and flowers bloom (dogwood, daffodil, iris, etc) but it's still not worth it. Fall is nice too with the orange and red maple trees, but then we have to rake about a ton of leaves.
Another bad thing is there is a big "sick season" here. Once we hit fall, everyone's kids start getting really sick from being shut in the house. All sorts of nasty viruses make the rounds until spring. I don't remember that in FL, and I was an elementary school teacher.
My whole family still lives in FL and I miss them. Now that we have 2 small children, I want them to be closer to their grandparents and uncle. When we went down to visit them in December, it was 17 degrees here as we were packing the car that morning! Then we enjoyed going to Blue Spring and basking in the sunny warmth down there. Driving down on I-75, the Ocala area is just gorgeous. I was so happy to drive through there and felt like I was back home. I also like Mt. Dora and Lake County. Sure, FL has been a victim of way too much sprawl, but the Atlanta area is worse. There are still some good areas of FL.
I hope to return sometime around summer 2010. (we are both teachers and there are NO jobs in FL right now with all of the layoffs) I miss the "patio" lifestyle, the BIG oak trees (that stay green all year!) and the tropical plants that grow everywhere with ease. Also, the bike trails are great down there. (we don't have any close by us and it's too hilly anyway)
Wish me luck (and hope my husband agrees to it! He's worried about crime, as I am, but I've become fixated on moving back!)

in South Florida. It was 82 degrees INSIDE my house today with all the windows and doors open. Even with the breeze, I couldn't take it and put on the AC. It's COMING....... The unrelenting HEAT AND HUMIDITY. Time to hibernate, just when those up north and are coming into lovely their SPRING.
As someone on my thread in the general forum, who still lives in Florida, posted, "I am jealous of those who live up north".
It is a very interesting thread. People in Florida should read what those across the country have to say about Florida. It gives me great comfort to know that I am not alone, or need a therapist for hating living here.
