Please do not forget the word racism works all directions. Some seem to forget that.

It is easy to point everything at the rednecks because it is ok to say it. But if anyone of us would mention the complete opposite group of a redneck it would not be right.
All of these people and their parents are a drain on our society, if any parent allows their child to drop out of HS then they are also a drop out as they just born us another generation of losers who will never contribute to America.
All HS dropouts should be forced to go into the military, go through double boot camp, forced to learn something and become decent men and women who then will see they need to be a part of our society, since mom and dad failed at it, maybe the military can show them the way.

Me and you see eye to eye here I am definitely a liberal, but pro military. I just disagreed with the Bush/Cheney doctrines as of late. I've actually posted critique on here that military system of teaching a profession is much better than public education. Not everybody needs to be going to college and bleeding the system. If you aren't getting a productive degree...stop wasting your parents money and tax dollars. I think you are going to see a backlash to this soon, all the "college educated" people who are waiting tables because they got a ba in some useless liberal arts BA and don't plan to go on to a masters/phd, and also effed around and college and their gpa isn't high enough to get a masters even if they wanted to. Hey, you have all your life to dabble in the arts.
A lot of us who are "white" look down more on rednecks for some reason as we know we had the exact same opportunities they did and they chose to throw it away.

Congrats!
Keep us posted as your info is very valuable to those of us who want to move to Florida.
Can I ask where did you live in Florida before and where are you moving back to?

It is surely beautiful there.
How did you end up in Newton NC? Job? I know Statesville and Asheville well enough to know Newton was right close to them.
Like two different world going back to PSL right?

To the person or persons who moved from FL, to western NC, and then back again, I'd really love to hear some specifics. My family has vacationed there numerous times now, and if it wasn't for my wife not wanting to move so far away from her twin sister, we'd be there. Although, I'm constantly working on her about it
If it were to happen, we'd likely move close enough to Asheville to work there, but definitely not inside the city proper. I'd like to hear arguments against that area that don't include work (my wife could almost certainly get a job at the Asheville hospital as a respiratory therapist, and that would of course be a prerequisite for moving there), or the weather (we are avid hikers, and enjoy the colder weather...there are some wonderful winter hikes we'd love to do).
I am 40, and my wife is 31. We have 3 young boys ages 7, 6, and 4. I would love to get the kids away from the local drug culture (that I grew up in), and raise them in a safer, more outdoorsy fashion. We are pretty much home bodies. By that, I mean we aren't doing the bar scene and stuff. Although being close to Asheville does mean concerts and nightlife when we want. Also it's a very artsy area, so for us, I would imagine that Asheville would be more than enough to support our lazy lifestyle
Both of us, and the kids, suffer the wait to get back to the mountains, and cry (yes, even me...) when it's time to leave. We have found that the mountains have changed us, but are very interested in hearing anything that might shock us out of our love for the area once living there.

We love to visit the Smokies and surrounding areas but would never want to live there.
I know a couple who lived in Florida for a many years and wanted to go to the mountains for a more laid back slow atmosphere and raise their kids in that. They could see Grandfathers Mountain from their house.
They moved to Boone NC which is not to far from Asheville and a beautiful area. They have lasted all but one year there and are now heading back to Florida.
They tried it and did not like it. Way to slow for them.
The more I read here I am finding out that if you moved to Florida from the NE or Midwest to begin with and did not like it, why move half way back?
Tells me you should not have moved to Florida to begin with.
This couple was originally from Ohio, moved to Florida and then to Boone, NC. Instead of coming back to Ohio, they are heading back to Florida.
They should have stayed in Florida in the first place. They are NOT mountain type people. You cannot jet ski in the mountains!!!
And they love the beach and thought they could run over the the NC shore any time they wanted. Yea, 9+ hour drive!
I can be at a Florida Beach from anywhere in Florida in less then 2 hours.
Maybe look around the Black Mountain NC areas.
But... if you like being warm, the sun, the ocean and all Florida offers, you wont be happy in NC, Tenn or any of those states. It would be rare if you were or you are not a Florida type person.

Oh I'm definitely not a Florida type person. Moved here when I was 10 with my parents. That was 30 years ago. Just found myself in a rut for many years, and took my first trip alone to the mountains a few years ago. Had I not met my wife, I'd be there now. Stuff happens
You might not be able to jet ski in western NC, but you can't make snow men or snow ski or sled or have snow fights...in Florida
You can get almost everything in NC short of ocean stuff. There is certainly a ton of fishing, places for swimming, and you can definitely "weekend" at the beach. I have to say, while I seem to be doing the beach thing more often the last year or so, for the 25 or so years prior to that, I hardly ever went. Even though I was mere minutes away.
In Florida, starting about now when the temps are hitting the mid to upper 80's, our outside fun ends. We spent more time at the beach during the winter months than we ever do during summer. Just too damn hot.
I personally think our kids are missing out on a lot of winter fun living down here. And they certainly wouldn't miss out on summer fun in the mountains. Lots of stuff to do up there too. My opinion of course...

Yeah, that is what is nice about NYS. You can do all those activites, from summer to winter, beaches to mountains, jet skiing, to snow skiing.
