How Southern are the Florida Heartland counties?
Specifically, the following Florida counties:
Hardee
DeSoto
Highlands
Okeechobee
Glades
Hendry
(Polk, while not officially in the region, might as well be included)

I had to go with #2 mainly because I'm not that familiar with the Panhandle.
But yeah, they are still Southern.

The Panhandle is very southern and the English grammar/voice is very, extremely with drawl. When I first moved up there, I could not grasp the English drawl and especially with a mouthful of chewing tobacco!
What exactly is the question or need to know?

Actually, many linguists beleive that the Southern accent is closest and the least changed in pronunciation from Elizabethan English, that is to say, the language of Shakespeare.
So show a little respect to the people that still speak the Queen's English (Elizabeth I, that is).

Good! Glad to hear some of my Old Florida still exists! Southern accents are music to my ears as a FL native!

I was curious to see how people would characterize the culture in those areas. Wasn't sure if they were mostly Hispanic migrants or Southern, native-born crackers like the Panhandle. I'm not terribly fond of Southern culture, but was considering purchasing some land out there ( OBVIOUSLY not the only factor I'm considering before somebody bashes me for that, but yes, it is something I would like to largely avoid...)

I'm not bashing but can't for the life of me figure out why someone who isn't terrible "fond" of the southern culture would want to move anywhere that is southern.
Maybe it's just me but life's to short to be subjected to a culture you weren't "fond" of.
But to each it's own I guess.

How did you decide which counties to include in the "Florida Heartland"?

#1 without a doubt. The southern portions of Polk (Frostproof and the Ridge) have been considered the Heartland even though PC isn't "officially" a Heartland County. I always wondered about that.
