Hey Everyone!

So I am a 23 year old male currently living in New York where I have all my life. I recently graduated with a degree in Music Education and am just substitute teaching at the moment and saving up money.

Having visited Fort Myers and going to visit Fort Lauderdale in two days, I am really considering moving down to Florida.

Ideally, I would love to move somewhere close to the beach, but maybe an hour or two from Orlando? (that part doesn't matter as much. I just love how much there is to do in Florida and how beautiful it is. I also recently came out as gay and am looking to meet new people as well!

Any suggestions on places to live (inexpensive apartments ideally)?

Any and all advice appreciated

Thanks guys!

Check job availability and salary then compare to housing costs before you settle on an area

It would depend upon the kind of social scene you like probably. If you're more of a party person and like the bar/nightclub scene a lot, the Miami-Ft Lauderdale area is definitely the place to be and tends one-dimensional in that respect as a single Gay man looking to meet others. There are other avenues to meet guys but they tend to revolve back around to bars/nightlife. If you're looking for a more well-rounded community with cultural/recreational outlets as well I would highly recommend Tampa-St Petersburg or even West Palm Beach which while closer to Ft Lauderdale, has a more laidback gay community with less dependence on the bar scene. In terms of jobs they might not crop up as frequently given the state cutbacks on music and arts in the schools thanks to our non-progressive Governor and state legislature. With that in mind besides Dade County (Miami), Broward County (Ft Lauderdale), Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach), Hillsborough County (Tampa) and Pinellas County (St Petersburg) you might look at other coastal options like Monroe County (Key West), Jacksonville (Duval, St John's, Nassau and Clay Counties) or Sarasota-Bradenton (Sarasota County) as each county's school district website will post openings.

This is solid advice ignored by too many.
Best of luck!

The more gay areas of Florida are Fort Lauderdale/Wilton Manors, Orlando, Miami and Tampa. My advice is to move in with your parents and save 2 years worth of rent before moving here. If you want to settle in the Fort Lauderdale area you can find some cheaper areas such as Pompano Beach which are only about 10 miles away or less and the rents are cheaper.

If you want to be near the beach in a gay area and an hour from Orlando you should pick Tampa/Ybor City.

Listen to aridon who gave you some sage advice. Florida is not a state to move to without a job. Plus, Florida is not inexpensive - Ft. Lauderdale is quite expensive and so is auto insurance. I would suggest you do your research. Just housing (rental) and auto insurance alone could wipe out a pay check. Focus on your desired area and plan accordingly. Good luck to you!

Please!!!! Find a job first! Florida still has double digit broad measure unemployment and it hasn't budged in two years. The job scene is competive and you could end up unemployed fast.
