Definitely make the drive. Once you hit interstate 10 you travel fast. Things feel slow in the beginning but then time goes by faster.
Flying back and forth my whole life it always felt like California and Florida were worlds apart. After you make the drive and see how everything is connected, it makes it feel like places aren't so far away afterall.

The most isolated part is West Texas, and they even have safe places to stop and gas up which cater to a travelers. The most boring part of the drive (and the place that has the most cops) was the pan handle of Florida but by the time you are there you are almost at your destination! With gas relatively cheap, it may make it too unaffordable to do it later in life.

On I-10, its brutal going through west Texas. Make sure you don't hit Houston at rush hour...you'll be there for 2-3 hours. Seeing oil dykes was neat out in the country, but seeing the cities with all of the refineries....ugly. Lake Charles, LA is probably the biggest eye sore I've ever seen.

At least you feel like making great progress going through 3 states in a couple hours from LA to FL.
