Oddly enough, they just don't bother me. There are many people that disgust me more than Periplaneta americana.

I am not bothered by other insects, reptiles, or animals, just the roaches. I grew up a tom-boy with bugs, reptiles, horses, dogs, cats, etc. I never had roaches up north, and only "dirty" households had them. They were black and smaller than those brown ones with wings that always seemed to be flying at me, which we found in Florida. Hey, at least they don't "hiss" like they do in Australia!
My sister moved down to Virginia and lived in Navy housing which was horrible at the time, but in reality, she was a slob, and she had roaches all over her house. I was visiting her, and I barely made it through the night.
I just think that I made the mistake of reading too much about roaches before moving to Florida. The fact that they eat and regurgitate and defecate on our food after eating it. Giving diseases, aggravating allergies, etc.
While in Fl, we plugged holes in the house, Tupperware open food and brought in an exterminator, and the roaches slowly disappeared, or we found them dead or dying on the floor, with their flailing legs twitching.
I had the incident with the bug dive-bombing into my long hair, and then another one after just waking up and seeing one fall from the ceiling onto the bed and thinking where he was heading if I didn't wake up!
We found out when we first moved to Florida, from several people we met, that no matter where you live, due to the humid environment, trailer, old house, new house, Everyone gets them.

I've lived here my whole life and have never gotten used to them. Rarely see them any more, but they freak me out. When I lived in Tallahassee, I saw one flying outside on my porch and was freaked until I saw that it was a hummingbird.

This is horrible. I have to small children and I don't like the thought of putting down boric acid. I'm Florida bound from NY. I don't think my children have seen a roach. I can't imagine this is going to me the norm once we relocate to Florida.
What would make them land in ones hair? Yuck!

I think the bugs are flying towards the tallest, closest thing they can see, sometimes it just happens to be your head. And no it doesn't happen frequently, but if you reread these posts you will see that it is nearly a universal experience.
Sprinkling a light dust of boric acid powder in the back of your cabinets is one of the safest and least toxic approaches to controlling insects in your home. I wouldn't worry about it if you applied it out of reach of your family and pets.

work hard to keep them away
There are things you can do to get rid of the palmetto bugs, big flying roaches that crunch when you step on them...ugggh.. and it works. We are pretty lucky.
