I read a book called "Class" a long time ago. It claimed that a lot of people from old money will drive very unremarkable cars. At the time I read it I thought they did that not to appear vulgar and nouveau riche, but after stories like this I wonder if it has a security element also.
A lot of home invasions are based on rumor. They think there is money in the house that may not be there or even exist. The people could actually be broke. If you read the book In Cold Blood that was the case. A whole family was killed based on a jail house rumor of a safe full of money. People talk and tend to exaggerate. You want nothing to do with bums and druggies. You can't help them. All you will do is expose yourself to some nut case boyfriend who shows up or something. The person you trust may not rob or kill you, but they may have you set up.

IE. "I know where there is some money, they have a safe in the house".

I had a long time friend who got on crack actually try to rob me. It is a long story, his wife died and he was a mess. I had even gotten him out of jail a few times. This guy knew I carried a gun and what the consequences could be but when they are whacked out, anything goes. I was leaving a bar I owned and ended up shooting a guy I had known for 20 years.

Are you suggesting that they were flaunting their money?

Wow, that's sad.

I think I somewhat naively associated with a lot of bad people. You think they are harmless just because you know them but they are not. You have to be careful letting anyone in your house. From what the news is now saying the ones who killed the couple may have worked for them from time to time. The police also mentioned a safe in the house.
