The central Panhandle actually has some of the highest housing prices in the state right now, though that's a case of there being less of the insane level of speculative building in that area than the peninsula saw.

Ft. Walton Beach's big economic strength is that it's a military town (70% of the local economy is directly or indirectly military-related) that came through the latest round of BRAC as a net winner. Between the arrival of the Green Berets and F-35 training group, the offsetting drawdown of a fighter wing, and a number of smaller program relocations:

Economic Development Council of Okaloosa County
Quote:

Anticipated BRAC Realignment Impacts:
(These figures may change)

  • To occur between FY09 and FY15
  • MILCON to exceed $735M
  • 5,000 additional military personnel
  • 87% Enlisted
  • 12% Officers
  • 1% Civilians
  • 6,500 dependents
A total increase in population of 12,000 is expected by 2016.
Which is pretty significant for a county with a current population of about 200,000. There are also some efforts going on right now to bring more high tech business to the area to serve as a civilian compliment to the DoD research and development in the area now.

I think Tallahassee and Gainesville have the lowest unemployment rates in the state. Both for obvious reasons -- government related jobs, healthcare jobs, and university related jobs.

Those areas are also non-tourism and real estate dependent.

I still have trouble parking at many shopping centers in Boca Raton (Palm Beach County). I also encounter waiting lines at restaurants during the weekend.

Gainesville's 7.5 percent rate was second lowest among 23 metro areas, behind only Fort Walton Beach-Crestview-Destin at 7.1 percent.

My best friend is working in a high-end furniture store in Gainesville, she is on track to have the best year in 10 years. Due to the type of professional people attracted to Gainesville, it looks pretty good right now
