Hi everyone. My girlfriend and I are planning an impromptu trip to Destin before class starts again for us. We're trying to minimize costs and are considering just staying in a hotel for a weekend.

I've typically stayed at a condo that has a couple of hundred yards of private beach for the residents so I'm kind of unsure how the beach situation works if you're staying somewhere that's not sitting on it. Are there public beaches we can drive to and park? Has anyone done the hotel thing before and have any pointers?

also, we don't HAVE to go to destin. if anyone knows a city that is more broke college student friendly let me know.

I really appreciate any advice everyone

Try VRBO® is Vacation Rentals By Owner (http://www.vrbo.com - broken link)

We've had great experiences with all the rentals, always better than we expected, here in the states and the UK. There's always a fully-stocked kitchen, even spices, etc. left from previous repeat guests. Books, magazines, sometimes DVDs. Some even have shampoos and other toiletries. The last place we stayed had coffee, tea, sugar, Smirnoff, Jack Daniels & 3 single-malt scotches. (Kind of an unwritten rule that you leave non-perishables for the next guest.) It's like your friend loaned you their place.

Usually, the owners are willing to accomodate you for a couple of days even if they advertise weekly only, unless it's high season.

Good luck finding a place & have fun!

There are a couple of large public beaches in the Destin/Ft. Walton Beach area. If you don't mind paying $5 or so, Henderson Beach state park is pretty big, nicely maintained and never too crowded. Furthes west, the county has two good-sized free parks on Okaloosa Island- the busy one with restaurants, bars, and a fishing pier and a smaller one a little to the east of there. There are also a series of small beach access parks, some with restrooms, some without, along Santa Rosa Blvd on Okaloosa Island. If you want really secluded, try Topsail Hill east of Destin in Walton County.
