Default Deltona

We will be moving to Florida soon, most likely to Deltona, a city in Volusia County which my husband is really sold on, but I am not sure of the area, as I have not seen to much about it. Anyone know the area? Would you share your opinion?

Thanks

I don't like it. I don't see any reason for people to live there other than they can't afford to move in closer to the ocean to a city like Port Orange or Ormond Beach. It's not a place I would consider... we bought in Port Orange, but I also really like Ormond Beach (both in Volusia County).

My best friend lives in Deltona. There is not much to do there and I am not overly impressed with it when I go to visit her. They have a skate park for the kids - a couple other parks. I guess she said today when we spoke that they are building this new theater-plex or whatever ...Hmm- that is about it! They want to move to New Smyrna Beach except they want to keep the high school aged kids in district until the graduate so they can be with their friends. My husband was born and raised in West Palm Beach and we plan to leave Phoenix in 2009 to move back to his hometown which is more our speed - but if you and your hubby like the slower paced lifestyle that Deltona offers, then you will like it there. Best way to know is by going there to visit to see for yourself. Good luck with everything.

Unhappy Boring Deltona

I just recently moved to Deltona from Findlay, OH. I am very disapointed. As we got settled in we have discovered there are no public swimming pools and absolutly nothing for kids to do in this area. I am very concerned about this as I am a mother of four children. Deltona is the largest city in this county but, yet the town itself has nothing. We could not even find a movie theater or an American restaraunt such as, Outback Steakhouse, Ruby Tuesdays, or Applebees. My children and I have been extremly bored since we have relocated from a town that has less people but tons more to do!

You are right.....nothing here....not even a Pizza Place or Starbucks! This town is beyond dead.....does not even feel like Florida here except for the heat. I am trying to get out soon. I see lots of homes for sale.....other are leaving by the dozens. They get a descent price on a home but nothing to do. Plus the taxes are tooooo high for a boonie town like this.
Did you ever go to the Food Lion in town.....the most depressing food store I have ever been in.

Therefore, this is a small town for folks that wants a slow place to enjoy life? Maybe not the perfect town for a young family, but maybe better for an older couple? Just asking and comparing views...

Deltona once was a retirement community. These days it is a bedroom community for folks who commute to metro Orlando. Heavy young hispanic population, large blue colar population in the trades. Home prices much lower than neighboring Seminole County are a huge draw. Actually folks from that area should check out downtown Deland. Such charm like stepping back in time..

Interesting to hear comments on Deltona as we almost bought there once upon a time and instead found a house across the river in Sanford..... Deltona certainly is or at least was the place where all the people priced out of the Orlando market went for cheaper housing. The town simply didnt' keep up with the growth, but between Deltona, DeBary and Orange City there's plenty of necessity shopping for sure along 17-92.

As far as family atmosphere??? I'd listen long and hard to those who live there because I don't know...

Anyway, there's always all of this talk about "Orlampa" and how Orlando and Tampa are going to become a megalopolis along the I-4 corridor, but you hear much less about the Orlando-Daytona connection which was pretty much undergoing the same transition.

Eventually Deltona will catch up to the crowd of people that moved in. They just need to hope the people are still there when they do...

I grew up there, unfortunately. How old are your children?

Deltona is a city that now, after 20 years, I can finally stop hating and step back and feel sorry for. I left there at 17 to go to UF and it was the best thing that I could have ever done in my life - EVER. Deltona is like every sad Bruce Springsteen song about the downtrodden, forgotten towns of America. What started as an older retirement community has morphed into a place with unacceptable levels of crime, poverty, and education. The education system is absolutely atrocious. Out of my graduating class of ~500 (going back 7 years), there were only 8 of us who went on to a university like UF, a few who went to FSU, UCF, and VERY few who went out of state. Sending roughly 80/500 kids to a university is just deplorable.

There is little to do to keep kids active there, especially as they grow into teenagers. Thank GOD I had good parents who would take me places outside of Deltona - like to the beach, etc. I always joke that the average age of starting a family is 16 in Deltona. It's just REALLY bad. I'm embarrassed to have grown up there, and I feel sorry for the people my age who never "made it out" of Deltona.

Also, if you look literally 18 minutes South on I-4, near Lake Mary and Longwood, you find a completely different world. Better jobs, cleaner, more money -> MUCH better schools. It's unreal. The atmosphere and education far outweigh the extra cost of living in those areas, in my opinion.
