Hello....

When you had your impact windows installed, was there a lot of dust that had to be cleaned up after the job was complete ? What precautions, if any, did the installer take to minimize dust ?

I am getting impact windows put in and want to make sure the installer is doing the right thing. He warned me that there may be dust afterwards.

This is a hard question to answer, there are too many variables. If the new windows are a good fit and drywall and masonry don't need to be cut, there shouldn't be much dust at all. The dust resulting from cutting from either one of these materials is extremely fine and is very difficult to contain. If the installer is able to suck up the dust with a shop vac while the cutting is being done (a helper is good for this) it will help a lot. The biggest problem in working with window and door openings is breezes blowing through the work area into the rest of the house. This can be dramatically reduced by keeping the door to the room being worked in closed off from the rest of the house. It's also very important to only work on one window at a time for the same reason. If a crew comes in and takes out several windows at once, (in different rooms) you can be sure that dust will be blown all over the house.
