Panama City and and non whites? Need advice
I am considering buying a beach home on the beach in Panama City Beach. My husband and I are professionals and travel a lot but not to this area. I know it's called the Redneck Riveria. To be honest the only reason we picked the area is because it had affordable beach property. I am very very concerned that Blacks are not welcome. I'm not looking for friends per se but I don't want to be harrassassed either (especially at my own home). I would appreciate any advice you have. It's better to not have a beach home than to be in an uncomforable situation especially with kids. I go to San Destin all the time and feel comfortable there even thought it's not diverse. Thanks

Redneck Riviera is not just Panama City but is from LA (lower AL) to Panama City. You really need to visit any area before you buy.
Maybe someone who actually lives there can tell you how diverse the area is. If you felt comfortable in Destin then you should be just fine in PCB

We just got back a couple of weeks ago from our condo in PCB. There were several black families there on the beach that were either renting or owners, I did not see any hint of a single person batting an eye. Quite honestly in this day of time I cannot imagine that anyone would.
If you were interested in buying a unit in our complex, we would be more than happy to give you any pointers we could.

My husband and I vacationed near and drove through the strip. We saw plenty of blacks along the strip and on the beaches. Red Neck riveria just means that people from the South go there and all people from the south are Red Necks don't you know.

Panama Native and Yes there are Black people there
I have been a P.C. Native since the late 70's, 39 now. I have lived here and grown up here and love it. My Wife and I live not 3 Blocks for the Fountainbleau Hotel and I would have no problem with people of other races. Wife and I walk the beach almost 3 times a week and I will say this. You dont see many Black Famalies in the off season but they do come down for the summer and we love to have them down.
Good Luck

Its been my experience that along the beach, people are fairly accepting, and you shouldn't have any problems.
However, if you are inland a little, you'll see rebel flags and a lot of rednecks. This is lower Alabama, and most of the panhandle is just a bunch of poor rednecks.
I say this, and I come from poor rednecks, so I know who they are.

What do you base your opinion on? It has a pretty average racial split, not really any different then most cities. Most of the population there were born after 1970 and don't represent the basic old white bigot stereotype of the past. Probably quite the opposite.

No, not quite the opposite, but I dont think you're gonna encounter any problems. Rednecks and rebel flags - yes. But all-out hatred to your face - very unlikely.
