Default Looking for old woodsy country/suburb housing!

Hey guys im new here and im looking to move down to FL from CT in about 2-3 months. I have been saving and planning this for awhile but still need to choose an area to live. FL is huge so I REALLY need your help picking out the right spot!

I am looking for a old suburb or country town in the northern part of FL preferably within 30-40 minutes from the beaches. I went down to daytona last year, drove around a bit and really liked cassedega and just outside deltona. I like old houses and quiet neighborhoods with plenty of privacy. I am very nature orented so I love woodsy areas with trails. I definatly want to stay out of the big citys where theres alot of people, traffic, crime exc. I wouldent mind living within 5 or 10 minutes of one though. It also needs to be very affordable because while I am still in my late 20's I am partly disabled so I cannot work full time. I am going to be looking to rent. Hope im not sounding too picky Thanks for your time and consideration, I will be looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

You might try Mount Dora, Deland, Dunellon, Newberry, Micanopi (my spelling may be off), or any of the towns around Ocala. They have smaller "know your neighbor" feelings and some feel like the modern world hasn't reached in and yanked the soul out. That list is based on you liking Cassedega.

Only challenge with living in a distant town in the central north part of Florida is getting the locals to warm up to you. As long as you are clear with them about not wanting to change their town, you'll be well received and make friends for life.

How about Apalachicola? I have only driven through there but it is seems to be a neat little town. The one thing is they do get hurricanes in that corner of FL. It is such a quaint little town.

Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce - Apalachicola, St. George Island, Forgotten Coast, Carrabelle, Eastpoint, Florida

You might want to check out Swanee, White Oak. If you don't mind going to the middle of the state you might want to check out Dade City. Not too far from Tampa but away from the hussle bussle.

I agree with Robineli.

Only other cities I would add would be DeLand, Barberville, Paisley, Elkton, Hastings, Bartow, Alachua, White Springs, Tarpon Springs, Amelia Island, Cedar Key, Lake City and Flagler Beach.

Other suggestion would be to source through your local disability services agency, what agencies and resources would be available to you in Florida that are nearby cities recommended.

Try the NE and E outskirts of Tallahassee or some of the places along the coast of the Panhandle, sounds more like what you are looking for.

With your circumstances, and if you don;t mind hippies, you might want to check out Miccosukee.

I came here from Vermont so I understand your
want of New England style stuff..... Personally, I dont fit in
here at all. Will never understand the lifestyle or mindset......
That being said and not wanting to turn this into a SFEC bashing thread,
I second whats being said about Mt. Dora /Eustis area. Looking
over the lake of Mt. Dora is like looking over Lake Champlain.
I would live in Mt. Dora in a second if my Wife and I could both
find a way to do it. Huge thumbs up to that area.
A very New England feel. Very nice and laid back, too.
If you prefer closer to the beach, try my town, Juno. You are
with people who are older, and there is not any nitelife, but
its quiet, safe by Florida standards, you are right on the beach,
close to Martin Co, and right in the middle of it are a few wildlife
preserves that are substantial enough to satisfy ones need to
commune with nature. I spend most of my time in them.
Yesterday for instance, I came face-to-face with a young Bobcat.
Too cool for words !!! I would say Juno or Mt. Dora / Eustis-
Central Florida. Also, look up Wildlife preserves on Google and
a lot of little towns that no one knows about come up...you
might want to look at them too, mostly west coast towns.
My advice might be to come here first and look around. Except
for Juno, I would avoid any place on the East Coast from Palm Beach County
on down. [/0.2¢]

Good luck.
