I can tell you Cocoa Beach is nice, but Cocoa is a huge dumpy ghetto. I lived in Rockledge, close enough to Cocoa to know....

BoardSport,
What exactly are you looking for in Cocoa? Perhaps we can steer you in a more suitable area?

You were too specific. You asked for only people who live there. I don't live there but I can give you an opinion. Lots of bars and alcoholism. I have never been to a place where on the weekend everybody who was out seemed to be drunk. I think drinking may he the main activity there.

It's a fun place to visit for the day (RJ surf shop, the beach, etc.) but I dont think it's a very pretty place to live. Kind of old and run down IMO. I'm sure there are some nice neighborhoods in the area, but the "city" area I find to be "cosmetically challenged."

Cocoa Beach is a lovely well kept secret....
Understand that Cocoa Beach is a barrier island and beach town. It is more for those who aspire to a simpler life close to nature. There is a long history of the surfer culture but it is not predominant. There is a mixed bag of retirees, surfer types, weekend condo warriors and students visiting. If you are looking for a ritzy cosmopolitan area to live, this is not it. Great restaurants are lacking. The beach however is beautiful and uncrowded. That is especially true in South Cocoa Beach. Waterfront property is more moderately priced than South and Southwest Florida. For shopping and some cultural amenities, you'll have to head to Melbourne
Cocoa Beach reminds me of the simpler times of Florida past. It has a little of the honky tonk vibe.
Some major advantages
Watching rocket launches from your home
Highly ranked school system (not common in Florida)
Proximity to Orlando and the Mouse (if you are so inclined)
Thousand Islands Nature Preserve
Sea Turtle Nests
Cape Canaveral National Seashore
Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
Cape Canaveral Cruise Port
A very laid back lifestyle where you can really enjoy being close to nature and the ocean
Hope that helps. Good luck in your search.
