....And they probably are, but as I've posted before, this site is about discussing, in this forum's case, Florida, but where one lives does not encompass one's entire being. IE. It is possible to despise where you live, but be comfortable enough in your financial situation to be hesitant to change locations..

OH please, thats just an excuse and you know it...have you seen the job market in Texas for example???

Every company from Motorola to Frito Lay, to Blockbuster has a major office in Dallas...

Your not trying if you can't find a job elsewhere, the job market here is terrible...

The thing that is bothering me SO much at the moment is this is normally the ideal time to be getting some sun but I can't because of all the smoke, I just had an asthma attack tonight...I will be glad when they can get the fires out and we can have some peace.

<<The 100% daily humidity and oppressive heat from dusk to dawn.>>

That can get tough after a while. The persistent humidity with no let up for about eight months wears you down the longer you live here especially in the southern part of the state. Though the climate is quite different in places on the NE coast like St Augustine are a lot more mild, lower humidity and with a much shorter period of A/C weather. I've been to most of the country by now and it is wonderful in so many places in their own unique way especially out west in higher elevations where the low humidity makes it feel much cooler when the temps are very high and warmer when it is cold. Most on the east coast do not understand that the typical early spring or late fall day in Colorado Springs or Boulder that gets to the low 60's during the day and mid 30's at night is heaven on earth for outdoor activity most of the year. In summer tempsnear 90 during the day dropping to 55 at tnight are comparable to a glorious February day in much of Florida. 300+ days of clear blue sky and incredible mountain settings a complete contrast to the NE and midwest as well as any place in the south ousdie of the Blue Ridge.. The atrraction of Florida for those who spent most of their lives in the dreary gray and cold climate in the NE is understandable No doubt this is the place to be for water activities, flip flops and summer clothes year round.. Anyone ever taking a flight in February from Logan or JFK to FLA would know that But get on a flight from Los Angeles or Denver in May-Oct to FLA and the humidity when you get off the plane is quite oppresive to me like walking into a steam room from the A/C... On the flip side actually summers right on the beach with balmy breezes and mid 80's temps here on the east coast of Florida can be heaven on earth while those slaving 30-40 miles inland find it a chore just to walk across the parking lot in their drenenched work clothes from both humidity and dodging afternoon showers.. I read several posts here from folks in Chicago and Boston, Two very incredible cities to visit when the weather is nice. Florida isn't going to be Nirvana for those making a life change because of weather and nice beaches. However it sure helps to have cashed in your chips before moving here.. ..

I think most Americans should have a mandatory course in Geography and basic climatology before they can be given a driver Licenses or allowed to vote.

Why do people think the Northeast has the market on cloudy weather? Northern New York, New England, Michigan, and the areas around the Great Lakes may have cloudy weather – but the Northeast Atlantic states from Connecticut south, have nearly the same amount of ANNUAL SUNSHINE THAN MANY PLACES IN THE SOUTH! Check the data! Places like Baltimore, MD average just as much annual sunshine as Houston, TX. There is little difference in the amount of annual sunshine in places like Atlanta, GA or New Orleans, LA, than in Trenton, NJ or New Haven, CT. Places in the Pacific northwest are significantly more cloudy the Atlantic Northeast and even the Midwest.

Sure, Miami gets more sun than NYC, but Miami gets more sun than 90% of the cities in the United States outside the Southwest and Southern California! If you think Maryland or New Jersey are cloudy and gloomy - try living in Washington or Oregon! Lets us at lest have some facts behind our assumptions.

Here is a list from the climate data of the National Climatic data Center:

Annual Percent Possible Sunshine%
(Total number of completely cloudy days)

Yuma 90% (52)
Phoenix 85% (70)
Key West 76% (107)
Los Angeles 73% (73)
Miami 70% (115)
San Diego 68% (102)

Why do people think that people should feel better about something they don't like because someone else has it worse???

I used to try that when I was struggling financially..... "Dang I hate my little apartment and don't have a lot of furniture, but hey..... I could be homeless or Ethiopian or something....". It just never worked. In fact, that attitude is a justification for NOT doing anything about your current situation, so I'm surprised an advocate of Florida would cheer on this approach. (obviously you don't subscribe to the, 'if you don't like it just move' theory...

So people are supposed to go, "Dang Florida sucks!!! It's so hot and oppressive for a good portion of the year, but hey!!! I could be living in Yuma, Arizona so I got that going for me...."

VAFURY,

I think you may have missed the point. I’m not trying to make myself feel better about something others or I don’t like, but I can’t stand when people twist the facts or take the TV Weather and believe it. I think what I find annoying is due to things like the talk-show like Weather Channel, provincialism, and other things, many Americans believe what I can only call “TV Weather”. TV Weather can be quite different from real weather and climate. Some people hate facts. Americans (southerners in particular) seem to think the northeast from DC to the Tri State area (NY/NJ/CT) is cloudy and gray 12 months a year. It just ant so baby.

I live in the Northeast (coastal CT) and wish I lived in a climate that had mild temps from November to March (the rest of the year I think is great) like Florida or California.
Also, I don’t think anyone is supposed to say “dang” Florida sucks. Florida is nice, I may even move there, but it’s a FACT that they have less sunny days than Southwest. Why do some people hate anything forces them to change their view of the world they think they know?

Sometimes educating people can be very lonely.

My husband came up from Florida this weekend. He has been living there for 3 years now. We went to daughter's graudation in upstate NY. It was cold (low 40s) and rainy. I was freezing my butt off in a coat and sweatshirt. In the hotel at night, I had the heat on, under a quilt, and two blankets. My husband was walking around in a lightweight jacket and shirt saying, "Ah, 40 degrees."

Think SOMEBODY who actually LIVES in Florida likes the HOT weather????? As you me, give me enough CLOTHES, heat, enough blankets, and I am FINE. You learn to layer. Actually, it is a very comforting feeling to be INSIDE and nice and warm, especially in front a roaring fireplace. It is very SENSUAL. There is no comparison to AIR CONDITIONING. lol

We plan to LEAVE Florida as soon as we can retire.

My husband & I were watching the Chicago Cubs & White Sox this afternoon & the crowd was in sweatshirts & gloves. I gotta tell ya, I miss variety in my clothing. We've been in heat-infested states for a long time now & while I've learned to adjust, I do miss the seasons.
