Fire season in Florida
We're having a very active season due to the drought. I looked out my window an hour ago and the sky was orange and there were ashes falling from the sky. The news said the fire was 20 miles away but it was spooky when I first went out to investigate.
What's going on where you live?

We had a fire near Port St Joe about ten days ago; it took a couple days to get under control. The haze and smell of smoke hung over us for awhile.
Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, but for such a sad reason.
This morning when I got up to let the dog out, the smell of smoke was quite intense, but a lot of people burn stuff around here so I never know for sure what's going on.

Ellie where do you live? All we have gotten here in Kissimmee is smoke from the fires in Volusia county. In the Ormond Beach Area it was pretty bad from what I saw and now in Lake County - which is getting a little to close for comfort. Good luck to all those who have to deal with this - I think it will get worse before it gets better unfortunately. Do you think it will be as bad as 1998? Also, what would you rather deal with fires or hurricanes?

I'm just outside of Gainesville, the fire is between Starke and Keystone Heights. The news was saying that things could get as bad as 1998 except now there are 7 million more people living in Florida than then. That's amazing.
The hurricanes of '04 were pretty exhausting too. Both are a natural part of living in Florida. You don't get to choose, you automatically get both.

I heard that something like 20,000 acres are currently burning here in Florida, spread over 600 locations. (That may not be exact, as I'm numerically dyslexic, but it's close.)

Its been bad but no one in my area has had to evacuate.
This is the dry season, when I lived in Texas this happened during the summer alot.
I was sort of relieved when Crist called out the National Gaurd to help fight the fires...I feel for the firemen and their families...some of these fires have been going on for SO long.
We have been getting smoke but no ashe, the wind today has helped clear the sky which was nice...some rain would be even nicer.
