Wink Moving from South Dakota "Burrrr" to Northern FL Need advice

Hi Everyone, my wife and I are over 50 no kids. We lived in south Fl most of our lives, then moved to SD. Don't want to move back to SFL as there is too much crime and over populated. We have family in Palm Coast and Cape Coral, read all of the negative issues concerning PC and Cape Coral. Between St. Augustine and Port Orange, open for suggestions for housing in the 300K range, nice neighbor hood with low crime. Schools are not a issue, I'm in the motorcycle business which I would think there's work in Daytona which I can commute to. We've been away from Fl for 5 years and need help on making this move.
Thanks for advise on this subject in advance. This is a great site with a lot of very nice and honest people!!!

Thanks Joe

Cowboy, I would suggest Tallahassee.

Best quality of life in Florida.

I don't know about all that. I beg to differ. I think Tallahassee is overrated. I hate the area, old-congested-small-and just not a great state capitol. I am shocked that it's still the capitol and not elsewhere where there is more "business" and so forth.

Rule of thumb-crime has no address (I work in property management and learned this quick-good area or not, nice place or not, it doesn't matter)-it matters none as to where you are. When crime statistics are figured, you must understand that it is based off of the area and population. Take Tampa Bay for instance, they say bad crime-ok-but the area is larger as well as more people then let's say Alachua County, for instance. You can find a good area anywhere in the state, especially for the price range that you are looking into. Don't sell yourself short on an area though, because when you pick N. Florida, you pick smaller areas and less things to do. Even if you chose New Port Richey (example), location wise would be better than in the middle of some dinky rink town...
This is just my opinion though...

I think the first thing I'd look at owning property in FL is easy access to it by air. (If you have to leave town on last minute, you can't always drive). From SD, I think the ONLY non-stop flight to FL is to Orlando/ Sanford on Allegient Air (from Sioux Falls). Right or wrong on this issue, you get the point.

From Orlando/Sanford airport, my suggestions would be DeLand, New Smyrna Beach, Flagler Beach or small towns along the St John's River or near Ocala National Forest, up to Palatka. These towns would be along/off of US17 or SR19, and if you are comfortable w/ REAL rural life, towns such as Barberville, Paisley, Cassadega or Samsula come to mind.

After spending 5 fun-filled days at the Daytona Dream Cruise, I can tell you there are lots of bike shops there. It's the biker-heaven of the south. Panama City has started "Thunder Beach" as a biker M&G twice a year and is gaining reputation with the biker crowd as well. I would think the market for your trade would be better in Daytona. We have friends there and they love it!
