Thanks everyone for all of your posts. Job is still open and the pay range is 130-180K. There's also another job in Macclenny, closer to Jacksonville that doesn't pay quite as well. My wife is going to check out the area this month and if she likes it I will probably apply.

While Jacksonville is larger, they are having a terrible problem with crme - lots of shootings, Lake City is about 45 minutes from Gainesville. We did a lot of our shopping in Gainesville. The money you are being offered is atypical for the Lake City area. Maybe because we are a bit older we didn't find Lake City that objectionable. If you are looking for acerage for your home, sounds like you are interested in a more rural setting. You may find that in some of the smaller areas near Lake City, like High Springs, Alachau, and Ft. White - between Lake City and Gainesville, if you want to be closer to the kind of resources Gainesville offers. Good Luck!

As a senior retired moved to Lake City,Columbia county from Suwannee for excellent property tax benefits,regular homestead,senior homestead and income.County not bad at all.As stated in post limited shopping but easy ride to other areas.Convient to interstates.
