in order to register your car in FLA you need a FLA insurance policy, to answer your question, you won't need FLA insurance until you move here.
When I moved I coordinated it so my NJ policy cancelled and my FLA policy kicked in on the same day, no overlap

Not sure about what you should do first, but be prepared for increased insurance rates. Mine doubled when I moved from Ohio to Florida.

Call your insurance agent and see what he/she suggests. They make nice comissions, so get your money's worth!

If you are able to keep the same insurance company, do what the above post did, have it switched from your Maine to a Florida policy on a date you choose, say the date you plan to get Florida License plates. As stated before get ready for a higher premium in Florida. Car Insurance is going to cost more there, and there is no way around it.

Fl. Plates
and don't forget when you register your car, there's $100.00 fee extra for bringing a car into the state.
My insurance is over a $1,000 with State Farm, for one 2002 car and that's after all the discounts, for thieft devices, disc brakes, no accidents, multiple cars.
Good luck on your move.

no always true, when I moved to FLA from NJ my rates went down. PVB is rated as a very low risk area

I don't think they charge that fee anymore in FL do they? When i moved here in 1994 they did and i had to pay that $100 but then not long after, the state refunded me my $100 because they got rid of that fee all together and refunded everyone who had paid it.

Wow! You think $1000 is expensive! lol You should see the prices here in the U.K. We've got a banger and pay £800 (about $1600?)!
