I'm in the same boat as ejecteject, but I'm in Gulf Breeze, so a "tad" closer than SoCal (though I moved back here from NorCal about 3yrs ago)...

Now that I am neck deep in Prez Ike's proverbial "military industrial complex", this drive on Hwy98 is literally starting to drill into my brain like festering maggots.

I literally dozed 3 x times over the 37 mi trip back home. I counted them, because each time scared the crap out of me. Thankfully, no one was close, and the German engineered handling was sufficient to keep me nimbly on the road.

SO, I'm thinking of these two places. I just drove around the neighborhood, and well, though I enjoyed the websites pics and lists of amenities, just a few blocks down the road from Cayo Grande FWB (I drove all the way down Denton to the "T" intersection, hung a left, and drove through the more sketchy/diceier streets w. the mobile homes) I came upon what I believe was a crack handoff. Needless to say, I sped off as expediently as possible, hoping to avert the cold hard stares of the customers and vendors standing there.

Thoughts on the Racetrack Road area where these two properties sit? Thanks!

Cayo grande-Fort Walton Beach Apartments for rent in Destin, Navarre, Florida, near Eglin and Hurlburt, Luxury and Corporate Apartment homes

Chez Élan - Apartment homes for rent in Fort Walton Beach Florida, near Eglin and Hurlburt AFB, Navarre, Destin, Crestview - Southern Ventures Corporation (I'm leaning towards this one, the area is less dicey, more small homes, and I didn't see any "business" going on around the area. LOL!

I lived in FWB for three years (four years ago) and loved it. We plan on moving back one day. Based on your questions and concerns, I think you will enjoy it there. If you want nature, you can drive north or you can go to the downtown area where they have a park on the water (at least they did back then). You should fly out and take a look around. I think you will like it.

Regarding "nice" girls - I do not know much about that. However, I can say that people were geniunely nice.

Good luck on your decision.

My husband is PSCing there in a couple of months and I am wondering how the area is. Is the base nice, are the areas around it nice and it is a small town? Are there teaching jobs there too? Is there stuff for small children to do as well? I would appreciate any information about this area.

Also is it anything like Fort Bragg? I mean is it a small military community?

Thanks

Default Info on local high schools, please!

Son is entering junior yr. By process of elimination I think I've narrowed it down to Navarre High School. Comments on this school? I think it really comes down to 4 choices -- Navarre, Niceville, FWB or Choctawhatchee, all of which appear to be good schools. He is coming off of a serious shoulder injury that req'd surgery and if he does decide to play football (that is up in the air at present) we need a program that will give a crap about him and is not a meat market. I think Niceville H.S. in general sounds too big and too much for an incoming junior (?) Bottom line, what school would be the best fit for a new kid transitioning to a new location, etc.?

In terms of entering as a junior, all four schools have large military kid populations and both schools and students are used to a fair amount of turnover every year. And you can get a good education at any of them. I know, not really helping with the process of elimination and all, but no particular reason to bounce any of them based on your criteria.

I would say that for a relatively small area, the area does have a relatively large traffic problem, especially in summer tourist months. If you live west of Hurlburt Field, you'll find yourself spending a fair amount of time stuck on US 98, which is over capacity during rush hour, and a huge problem when there's an accident because it is literally the only through route between Navarre and Ft. Walton Beach.
