Default Taxes and Homeowners Insurance in Central Florida

Ok, I have been reading these forums for a while now, but this is my first post. We lived in S. Florida for several years in the 80's, but that was BTS (before the storms!!). The kids are grown and we are finding ourselves yearning for the warm winters again, are and considering moving back, maybe to the Central Fla area this time. We are considering the Tavares, Mt. Dora, Euistis, Leesburg region.
To be honest, some of the posts we have read scare us. Homeowners Ins. at 12 to 16K a year? (understand the Homestead rules) Property Taxes at 7K a year for a $400K home? I see more people posting about leaving, than relocating to Fla.
Am I over reacting, or is it really as bad as it seems?

Thanks in advance for your commets and input.

Pilot

by FLA terms, taxes are high and insurance is expensive, especially for newcomers who get screwed by the 2 tier property taxes.
In my situation, taxes are a bit less than NJ and insurance is a bit higher.
it's all about what you can afford and how bad you want to live in FLA.
